{"id":96096,"date":"2020-10-10T09:54:47","date_gmt":"2020-10-10T01:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=96096"},"modified":"2020-10-10T09:54:48","modified_gmt":"2020-10-10T01:54:48","slug":"south-sudan-ruling-party-sued-for-not-appointing-women-to-top-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=96096","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan: Ruling party sued for not appointing women to top posts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/annafrica.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/South-Sudan-President-Rebel-Leader-Agrees-To-Form-Unity-Government.jpg\" alt=\"Ruling Party Sued For Locking Out Women From Top Posts\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>JUBA, Oct 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A group of activists in South Sudan have taken the ruling party, Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement (SPLM), to the Supreme Court for what they call a \u201cviolation\u201d of women\u2019s constitutional rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They accuse the party of not respecting the constitution and provisions of the September 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement which grant a 35% gender quota for women at all levels of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition was received by the deputy Chief Justice, John Gatwich Lul, who promised to submit it to Chief Justice, Chan Reec Madut, for consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, President Salva Kiir appointed nine governors to the country&#8217;s ten regional states. Only one was a woman, Sarah Cleto Rial, who was nominated by the party of the first Vice-President Riek Machar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president&#8217;s party did not appoint any woman in its six gubernatorial slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are urging the Supreme Court to order the SPLM and compel them to remove two male governors and replace them with two females,\u201d Wani Michael, the petitioner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wani said if the court fails to respond to their plea, there is a possibility of moving to the East African Court of Justice in Arusha, Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Sudan is a member of the East African Community bloc, but it is yet to be admitted fully. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JUBA, Oct 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A group of activists in South Sudan have taken the ruling party, Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement (SPLM), to the Supreme Court for what they call a \u201cviolation\u201d of women\u2019s constitutional rights.
