PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Sept 25 (Bernama) — Najib Razak has\nobtained a 30-day extension to file his petition of appeal in his SRC\ninternational Sdn Bhd case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Court of Appeal three-man panel comprising Justices Has\nZanah Mehat, Lee Swee Seng and Nordin Hassan allowed Najib’s application for\ntime to be extended to enable him to file the petition of appeal after the\nprosecution did not object to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee representing\nNajib applied for an extension of time beginning Sept 18 until Oct 18 to file\nthe petition of appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He told the court that the reason for applying for time to\nbe extended was because the records of appeal consisted of 112 volumes and the\nHigh Court’s grounds of judgment is 801 pages long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In the interest of substantive justice, we do need\ntime to adequately prepare the petition,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul informed\nthe court that the prosecution has no objection to the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to court procedure, the defence in Najib’s appeal\nhas 10 days to file the petition of appeal after receiving the records of\nappeal. The due date to file the petition of appeal is on Monday (Sept 28).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Najib is appealing against his conviction, 12 years jail\nsentence and US$50.38 million (RM210 million , US$1 = RM4.16) fine imposed on\nhim by the High Court on July 28, this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 67-year-old former prime minister was found guilty on\nseven charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of\nposition involving RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Najib was sentenced to 12 years jail for the offence related\nto abuse of power, 10 years jail each for three criminal breach of trust\noffences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was also sentenced to 10 years jail for each of the\nthree counts of money laundering. The High Court ordered that all sentences run\nconcurrently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Najib is currently out on a RM2 million bail in two sureties\npending appeal in the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prosecution, meanwhile, has also filed a notice of\nappeal on Aug 11, this year against the sentence imposed on Najib by the High\nCourt. However, it is learnt that the prosecution has yet to file its\npetition of appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Najib’s appeal is fixed for case management on Oct 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former prime minister was exempted from attending\nFriday’s court proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
