{"id":93797,"date":"2020-09-25T10:52:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T02:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=93797"},"modified":"2020-09-25T10:52:02","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T02:52:02","slug":"thailand-takes-legal-action-against-facebook-twitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=93797","title":{"rendered":"Thailand Takes Legal Action Against Facebook, Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BANGKOK, Sept 25&nbsp;(Bernama) &#8212;&nbsp;Thailand\u2019s Digital\nEconomy and Society Ministry on Thursday&nbsp;filed complaints with cybercrime\npolice against&nbsp;Facebook and Twitter for ignoring requests to take down\ncontent deemed illegal and materials critical of the monarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Digital Economy and Society Puttipong Punnakanta\nsaid the ministry had&nbsp;sent a warning to the two social media\ncompanies&nbsp;to take down content&nbsp;on Aug&nbsp;27. The companies,\nhowever, did not comply with the 15-day deadline of the court-issued takedown\norders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said Facebook only took down 225 of 661 posts\nwhile&nbsp;Twitter only removed five of 69 posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said no action was taken against Alphabet\u2019s Google as it\ntook down the 289 YouTube videos as specified in the order on Wednesday (Sept\n23).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis&nbsp;is the first time we are using Computer Crime Act\nagainst major social media companies for not giving full cooperation (to take\ndown content).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAction will be taken in accordance with Thai law as it\nhappened in Thailand,\u201d he said at a press conference here Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Computer Crime Act, those found violating it will\nbe fined up to US$6,337&nbsp;(200,000 baht), then 5,000 baht per day until the\norder is observed. (US$1 = 31.56 baht)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puttipong said the ministry would file more such takedown\nrequests to social media companies, asking them to remove items from their\nplatforms, with content ranging from drugs and&nbsp;pornography to criticism of\nthe monarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ministry will file more takedown requests to Facebook,\nTwitter and Google to remove about 3,000 items from their platforms, including\n1,748 on&nbsp;Facebook, YouTube (607) and Twitter (261) as well as about 400\nfrom other websites,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Puttipong said the ministry also filed separate\ncybercrime complaints against five individuals, including politicians and\nprotest leaders, for allegedly criticising the monarchy on Facebook and Twitter\nduring a major anti-government protest in Bangkok last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; BERNAMA&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BANGKOK, Sept 25&nbsp;(Bernama) &#8212;&nbsp;Thailand\u2019s Digital Economy and Society Ministry on Thursday&nbsp;filed complaints with cybercrime police against&nbsp;Facebook and Twitter for ignoring requests to take down content deemed illegal and materials critical of the monarchy.
