KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) — Malaysia is\nconsidering to impose a carbon tax on future investments to support the\nsustainability agenda in a bid to tackle climate change, said Environment\nand Water Ministry (KASA) secretary-general Zaini Ujang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the World Bank, a carbon tax directly\nsets a price on carbon by defining a tax rate on greenhouse gas emissions or \u2013\nmore commonly \u2013 on the carbon content of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zaini, however, did not elaborate further on the carbon\ntax plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To manage the risk of climate change, Zaini said, a new\nClimate Change Act might also be drafted in the near future, depending on the\nunderstanding of the policymakers and demand from the people at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe might also use the existing law, such as the\nEnvironmental Quality Act 1974, together with it (the new Climate Change Act),\u201d\nhe said at the Cooler Earth Sustainability Summit 2020 webinar here Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a session titled \u201cAre You Ready? Tough\nRegulations, But with Incentives\u201d, Zaini revealed that the government\nwas currently revising the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to include climate\nchange and sustainability and mandate greenhouse gases management and\nreporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt the moment, we are planning to study the need\nfor climate change legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf we require one, we would like to draft one,\u201d he said,\nadding that it would include private sector reporting and economic instruments,\nemulating what had been done in New Zealand, the first country in the\nworld to request climate risk reporting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
