We\u2019re thankful for community intervention to secure their release,\u201d World Vision\u2019s director in Congo Anne-Marie Connor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident was confirmed by Lubero\u2019s chief administrator,&nbsp;<strong>Richard Nyembo<\/strong>, who said the ambush was carried out by so-called Mai-Mai, the term for self-described community defense groups, as the convoy was returning from a mission to distribute food.&nbsp;Two other aid workers were kidnapped, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2020\/08\/10\/massacre-dr-congo-ituri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">east of the DR Congo<\/a>, a vast country the size of continental western Europe, has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2020\/06\/16\/six-killed-adf-congo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unstable<\/a>&nbsp;for more than a quarter of a century, gripped firstly by full-blown regional wars and then by marauding militias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed groups typically claiming to defend ethnic groups carry out attacks on civilians and kidnappings, often clashing with rivals over valuable mining resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Kivu is a hotspot for attacks on aid workers, notably in the territories of Masisi, Lubero, Rutshuru, and Walikale.
