{"id":87179,"date":"2020-08-12T09:45:57","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T01:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=87179"},"modified":"2020-08-12T09:45:59","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T01:45:59","slug":"covid-19-russia-vaccine-claim-faces-scepticism-as-nations-renew-virus-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=87179","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Russia vaccine claim faces scepticism as nations renew virus battle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Vaccine.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Vaccine.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MOSCOW, Aug 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Russia claimed it has<br>developed the world\u2019s first vaccine offering \u201csustainable immunity\u201d<br>against the coronavirus, despite mounting scepticism about its<br>effectiveness as fears grow over a second wave of infections across<br>the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Vladimir Putin said the vaccine was safe and that one of<br>his own daughters had received the inoculation, dubbed \u201cSputnik\u201d after<br>the pioneering 1950s Soviet satellite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know that it is quite effective, that it gives sustainable<br>immunity,\u201d Putin said of the vaccine developed by the Gamaleya<br>research institute in coordination with Moscow\u2019s defence ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia\u2019s health ministry said though clinical trials were not yet<br>complete and final stage testing involving more than 2,000 people was<br>to start only on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western scientists have previously raised concerns about the speed<br>of development of Russian vaccines, suggesting that researchers might<br>be cutting corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization\u2019s spokesman in Geneva Tarik Jasarevic<br>said it was in \u201cclose contact\u201d with Russian health authorities but<br>that it was too soon for any WHO stamp of approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPre-qualification of any vaccine includes the rigorous review and<br>assessment of all the required safety and efficacy data,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Berlin, a spokesman for the German health ministry told<br>newspaper group RND that \u201cthere is no known data on the quality,<br>efficacy and safety of the Russian vaccine,\u201d adding that \u201cpatient<br>safety is of the highest priority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia hopes to begin production in September and start vaccinating<br>medical staff immediately afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian sovereign wealth fund that<br>helped develop the vaccine, said the doubts about the vaccines were<br>part of \u201ccoordinated and carefully orchestrated media attacks\u201d<br>designed to \u201cdiscredit\u201d the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that 20 foreign countries have pre-ordered over a billion doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The race for a vaccine is heating up as nations across the globe<br>brace for new outbreaks of the disease \u2014 even as they try to restart<br>economies battered by months of lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia said Tuesday it would launch a Phase 3 human trial of a<br>vaccine candidate from China\u2019s Sinovac Biotech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phase 3 refers to trials involving large numbers of human test<br>subjects and is usually the last step before regulatory approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinovac\u2019s vaccine, dubbed CoronaVac, is already being tested on<br>9,000 Brazilian health workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO says that 165 candidate vaccines are being worked on around<br>the world, with six reaching Phase 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But emergencies director Michael Ryan warned that finding a vaccine<br>would not automatically spell the end for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have perfectly effective polio and measles vaccines, and we<br>still struggle to eradicate or eliminate those diseases. You\u2019ve got to<br>be able to deliver that vaccine to a population that want and demand<br>to have that vaccine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a tally, the number of confirmed infections<br>worldwide since the virus first emerged in China late last year has<br>passed 20.1 million, with almost 737,000 deaths, with that number<br>expected to surpass 750,000 within days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand on Tuesday broke a more than 100-day streak without<br>locally transmitted coronavirus infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have all worked incredibly hard to prevent this scenario,\u201d<br>Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, but \u201cwe have also planned and<br>prepared for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, New Zealand has reported just 22 deaths from coronavirus,<br>although authorities repeatedly warned a second wave was \u201cinevitable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan on Tuesday announced its<br>first coronavirus lockdown after having been largely shielded from the<br>disease for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in Europe, the European Union\u2019s ECDC health agency urged<br>countries to reinstate some controls as new cases began to pick up<br>again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France has reimposed mask-wearing in certain crowded areas and<br>tourist hotspots of the capital Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Jean Castex said he would ask local authorities \u201cto<br>extend as far as possible the obligation to wear masks in public<br>spaces\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Castex added that unless the French public acted individually and<br>collectively, \u201cwe expose ourselves to a high risk of epidemic<br>resumption that will be difficult to control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several French towns and cities have already tightened mask rules,<br>as have parts of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spain, authorities have ordered nationwide mask-wearing in<br>public places and some regions have returned to lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain has added an average of almost 5,000 new cases per day over<br>the past week \u2014 more than France, Britain, Germany and Italy<br>combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In China, the city of Wuhan where the novel coronavirus first<br>emerged is limping back to normal after lockdowns were lifted in<br>April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business is slow for stall owners at food markets, while a<br>pandemic-themed exhibition shows off autographed hazmat suits used by<br>medical workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China officially recorded around 85,000 cases and just over 4,600<br>deaths \u2014 a fraction of the world\u2019s total \u2014 and has now largely<br>brought its domestic virus spread under control. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOSCOW, Aug 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Russia claimed it hasdeveloped the world\u2019s first vaccine offering \u201csustainable immunity\u201dagainst the coronavirus, despite mounting scepticism about itseffectiveness as fears grow over a second wave of infections acrossthe globe.
