LIMA, Feb 15 (NNN-ANDINA) — Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez said information the\u00a0Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group<\/a>\u00a0aims to collect in Brazil \u2014while interrogating Odebrecht’s former employees\u2014 will be essential and key to punish those who committed corruption in Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asked citizens to be confident that the special team’s work is carried out within the law and\u00a0is intended to gather more evidence<\/a>\u00a0in order to prosecute corruption offenders.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, he described as speculation the claim that the\u00a0collaboration agreement with Odebrecht<\/a>\u00a0benefits the Brazilian company and harms the Inca country’s interests.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perez will head to Brazil joined by\u00a0Lava Jato Team Coordinator Rafael Vela<\/a>, as well as other prosecutors and case’s Ad Hoc State Attorney Jorge Ramirez.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those scheduled to testify on Thursday are Odebrecht’s former Secretary Maria Lucia Guimaraes Tavares and Structured Operations Division ex-Coordinator Hilberto Mascarenhas Alves da Silva.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted the Structured Operations Division was the company’s bribery department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will testify about the North Interoceanic Highway and the Lima Metro \u2014built during ex-President Alan Garcia’s second term in office\u2014 and the Costa Verde\u2013Callao Stretch concession.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such\u00a0as:\u00a0Alejandro Toledo<\/a>\u00a0(2001-2006),\u00a0Alan Garcia<\/a>\u00a0(2006-2011),\u00a0Ollanta Humala<\/a>(2011-2016), and\u00a0Pedro Pablo Kuczynski\u00a0<\/a>(2016-2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori \u2014currently under preventive detention\u2014 also allegedly received money from Odebrecht for her 2011 election campaign. — NNN-ANDINA
