KOTA KINABALU, July 30\u00a0(NNN-BERNAMA) — Sabah Chief Minister\u00a0Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal\u00a0has announced the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for a state election, which has to be held within 60 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mohd Shafie made the announcement today at the Sabah State Administrative Centre here after obtaining the consent of Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Mohd Shafie\u00a0had an audience with Tun Juhar\u00a0at Istana Negeri\u00a0here, and a vehicle carrying the chief minister was seen entering the palace at\u00a08.25 am.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shafie said he had sought and obtained the consent of Tun Juhar to dissolve the state assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will still be performing my duties as the Chief Minister during the period when the state assembly is dissolved,\u201d he told a press conference at the Sabah State Administrative Centre here, after meeting state assemblymen and Members of Parliament from the government bloc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shafie said it is the people of Sabah, not other quarters, who would determine the state government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political situation in Sabah has heated up after former chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman\u00a0yesterday claimed that he had secured a simple majority to form a new state government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sabah State Legislative Assembly has\u00a065 seats, with the Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan)-led bloc controlling\u00a045 seats and the opposition holding\u00a020 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government bloc comprises Warisan (31 seats), DAP (6), UPKO (2), PKR (2) and four appointed assemblymen, while the opposition is made up of Bersatu (9), PBS (4), STAR (3), Independent (2), UMNO (1) and one appointed assemblyman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dissolution of the state assembly comes some 26 months after Shafie, the Warisan president, was appointed as the Chief Minister on May 12, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 14th general election (GE14), Warisan won 21 state seats while its allies from Pakatan Harapan (PH) won eight — six by DAP and two by PKR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the total of 29 seats won by Warisan and PH then were short of the simple majority required to form the state government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warisan-led bloc then gained six seats through defections by Barisan Nasional assemblymen, boosting its share to 35 of the 60 seats in the state assembly and giving it the right to form the state government on a simple majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following that, Shafie was sworn in as the 15th Chief Minister of Sabah at Istana Negeri on May 12, 2018, replacing the BN and STAR coalition led by Musa as the state government in a matter of 48 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In GE14,\u00a0BN won\u00a029 seats and\u00a0STAR took two seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Bernama also reported that the Election Commission was awaiting an official notification from Sabah state assembly speaker Datuk Syed Abas Syed Ali on the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Sabah speaker\u00a0needs to issue a notice (to the EC) first. Once the notice has been received, the EC will issue a statement,\u201d\u00a0said an EC official, when contacted by the Malalaysian National News Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
