{"id":83507,"date":"2020-07-15T16:30:59","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T08:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=83507"},"modified":"2020-07-15T16:31:01","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T08:31:01","slug":"govt-proposes-lower-alcohol-permissible-levels-amid-high-cases-of-drink-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=83507","title":{"rendered":"Govt proposes lower alcohol permissible levels amid high cases of drink-driving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/malaysia-police-check.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83508\" srcset=\"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/malaysia-police-check.jpg 640w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/malaysia-police-check-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/malaysia-police-check-555x370.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>KUALA LUMPUR: File photo of a routine check by the city police for drink-driving.<br>Photo courtesy of BERNAMA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; The Transport Ministry will propose for\u00a0a reduction in the\u00a0permissible alcohol content levels\u00a0in\u00a0the blood,\u00a0urine, and breath\u00a0of those operating a vehicle in accordance with\u00a0the World Health Organization standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its Minister&nbsp;Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the new limit to be proposed is&nbsp;22 micrograms of alcohol in&nbsp;100 millilitres of breath;&nbsp;50 milligrams of alcohol in&nbsp;100 millilitres of blood&nbsp;or 67 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently,&nbsp;the permissible alcohol content levels for defining drink-driving stand at 35 micrograms of alcohol per&nbsp;100 millilitres of breath, 80 milligrams of alcohol per&nbsp;100 millilitres of blood or 107 milligrams of alcohol per&nbsp;100 millilitres of urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wee said the amendments&nbsp;to&nbsp;Sections 41&nbsp;to&nbsp;45 of&nbsp;the Road&nbsp;Transport Act 1987 (Act 333),&nbsp;to provide for&nbsp;heavier punishment&nbsp;against reckless drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs would be tabled&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;current Dewan Rakyat sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said this in reply to a question from&nbsp;Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (BN-Arau) who wanted to know if the government had plans to amend the existing act on drink-driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wee&nbsp;said his ministry had also conducted an online survey from&nbsp;May 21 to June 4 on the drink-driving issue&nbsp;involving 345,021 respondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said almost 97 per cent of respondents had agreed that the quantum of existing punishments&nbsp;is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA total of&nbsp;324,489 or 94 per cent of the total respondents have agreed that&nbsp;heavier&nbsp;penalties be imposed on drunk drivers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; The Transport Ministry will propose for\u00a0a reduction in the\u00a0permissible alcohol content levels\u00a0in\u00a0the blood,\u00a0urine, and breath\u00a0of those operating a vehicle in accordance with\u00a0the World Health Organization standard.
