{"id":82399,"date":"2020-07-07T15:01:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T07:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=82399"},"modified":"2020-07-07T15:03:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T07:03:21","slug":"gunmen-on-motorcycle-kill-15-farmers-in-northern-nigeria-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=82399","title":{"rendered":"Gunmen on motorcycle kill 15 farmers in northern Nigeria: police"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/inter-06-3.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/inter-06-3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KANO (Nigeria), July 7, 2020 (BSS\/AFP) \u2013 Gunmen on Monday killed 15 farmers in Nigeria\u2019s northwest Katsina state, police said, in the latest violence by cattle thieves in the restive region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly 200 gunmen on motorcycles besieged the farmers in Yargamji village, 25 kilometres from the state capital Katsina, opening fire on them, police spokesman Gambo Isah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFifteen bodies were recovered from the farms after the attack which was carried out by bandits,\u201d Isah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey came on motorcycles numbering around 200.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local residents confirmed the attack, adding that the assailants arrived around 1000 GMT and stopped at the crop fields outside the village where they opened fire on the farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isah said counter-terrorism personnel were sent to \u201cengage the bandits\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rural communities in Katsina, President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s home state, have been repeatedly targeted by gangs of cattle thieves and kidnappers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, bandits killed 57 people in raids on several villages in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attempts by local authorities to broker peace with the criminal gangs have not been successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military has carried out air raids on bandit camps in Katsina and neighbouring Zamfara state to end the incessant killings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gangs maintain camps in the vast Rugu forest which straddles Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna and Niger states from where they launch deadly attacks. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KANO (Nigeria), July 7, 2020 (BSS\/AFP) \u2013 Gunmen on Monday killed 15 farmers in Nigeria\u2019s northwest Katsina state, police said, in the latest violence by cattle thieves in the restive region.
