{"id":80283,"date":"2020-06-23T15:50:40","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T07:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=80283"},"modified":"2020-06-23T16:04:39","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T08:04:39","slug":"countrys-debt-could-hit-55-pct-of-gdp-govt-to-ensure-fiscal-discipline-tengku-zafrul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=80283","title":{"rendered":"Country&#8217;s debt could hit 55 pct of GDP, Govt to ensure fiscal discipline &#8211; Tengku Zafrul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR,\u00a0June 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; The country\u2019s debt level could hit the statutory limit of 55 per cent of gross domestic product at the end of the year from 52 per cent currently following the implementaion of measures to save lives, protect\u00a0livelihoods and\u00a0stimulate the economy, Finance Minister Tengku\u00a0Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government had announced the RM260 billion Prihatin Rakyat economic stimulus plan (PRIHATIN), followed by&nbsp;the RM35 billion short-term economic recovery plan (PENJANA) aimed at stimulating the country\u2019s economy that&nbsp;has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the government\u2019s direct fiscal injection to RM45 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c(But) I have mentioned several times that between 97 per cent and 98 per cent of our debt is domestic debt, and this is important as it means that our exposure to foreign currency fluctuation risks is very limited,\u201d he said when presenting the 10th&nbsp;LAKSANA (the Economic Stimulus Implementation &amp;&nbsp;Coordination Unit Between National Agencies) report Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one recent interview, Tengku Zafrul had said that the RM10 billion direct fiscal injection in PENJANA was raised from Malaysian Government Securities&nbsp;and Malaysian Government Instrument Issues. He also said that Malaysia can afford the 55 per cent debt to GDP&nbsp;ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his speech on the&nbsp;report, he added that the government is very committed to ensuring fiscal discipline is maintained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnalysts, rating agencies and investors understand that Malaysia, like other countries, will post a higher deficit following various economic stimulus measures.
