{"id":79745,"date":"2020-06-19T17:38:33","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T09:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=79745"},"modified":"2020-06-19T17:52:51","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T09:52:51","slug":"kenya-wins-seat-at-unsc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=79745","title":{"rendered":"Kenya wins seat at UNSC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UNITED NATIONS, June 19 (NNN) &#8212; Kenya has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, defeating Djibouti for a seat designated for African countries, a news release from United Nations said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UN Member States chose the country in a second round of voting on Thursday in the General Assembly, with 192 ambassadors casting their ballots during pre-determined time slots, due to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The run-off took place one day after elections to select five new non-permanent members to serve on the Council, based on regional groupings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Kenya and Djibouti had failed to secure the required two-thirds majority on Wednesday, or 128 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second round, Kenya received 129 votes, and Djibouti 62.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifteen countries sit on the Security Council, the UN organ that maintains international peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five are permanent members, who have the right to veto resolutions: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms, with five elected each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining Kenya at the iconic horseshoe-shaped table in January&nbsp;are India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway.
