{"id":77910,"date":"2020-06-08T15:34:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T07:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=77910"},"modified":"2020-06-08T15:35:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T07:35:23","slug":"covid-19-uk-travel-quarantine-rules-come-into-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=77910","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: UK travel quarantine rules come into effect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/660\/cpsprodpb\/171FB\/production\/_112551749_mediaitem112551747.jpg\" alt=\"people arriving at airport\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LONDON, June 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; New rules requiring all people arriving in the UK to self-isolate for 14 days have come into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those arriving by plane, ferry or train &#8211; including UK nationals &#8211; will have to provide an address where they will self-isolate and face fines of up to \u00a31,000 if they do not follow the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Secretary Priti Patel said the laws were designed &#8220;to prevent a second wave&#8221; of coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some industries have warned they will be severely impacted by the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone arriving from the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man does not have to complete the form or enter quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also exemptions for workers in some industries such as road haulage and medical professionals who are providing essential care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All other travellers have to fill in a &#8220;public health passenger locator&#8221; form on arrival. Failure to do so could lead to a penalty of \u00a3100, or travellers may be refused entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they are unable to provide an address, the government will arrange accommodation at the traveller&#8217;s expense. There will also be checks to see whether the rules are being followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has faced criticism from the aviation industry and some Tory MPs over the measures, but Patel said the measures were &#8220;proportionate&#8221; and being implemented &#8220;at the right time&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The science is clear that if we limit the risk of new cases being brought in from abroad, we can help stop a devastating second wave,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those arriving in England and Northern Ireland could face a fine of \u00a31,000 if they fail to self-isolate for the full 14 days, while they face a \u00a3480 fine in Scotland. The maximum fine for repeat offenders in Scotland is \u00a35,000.
