{"id":76985,"date":"2020-06-02T16:40:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T08:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=76985"},"modified":"2020-06-02T16:41:51","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T08:41:51","slug":"us-unrest-new-york-under-curfew-as-looters-hit-luxury-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=76985","title":{"rendered":"US unrest: New York under curfew as looters hit luxury stores"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/NEwyork.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/NEwyork.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NEW YORK, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; New York was placed under a night curfew, officials said, after looters raided stores in central Manhattan, targeting some of the city\u2019s top retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upmarket fashion store Michael Kors on Fifth Avenue was among the luxury outlets hit, along with Nike, Lego and electronics shops across Midtown, before the 11 pm to 5 am curfew came into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groups of young people moved from block to block around the district, usually bustling with tourists but deserted due to the coronavirus, with entire streets blocked by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Images from local NY1 television showed some young people running out of a Best Buy electronics store before being apprehended by the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stores in the south of Manhattan suffered a similar fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York Times reported that the flagship Macy\u2019s department store had also been targeted by looters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police did not immediately confirm this, simply saying that \u201cnumerous stores were hit\u201d and arrests made \u201cin the hundreds\u201d across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Bill de Blasio said a lot of stores around Madison Avenue had been hit and the situation was \u201creally not acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result he said the curfew would start from 8 pm on Tuesday instead of 11 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe city is fully under control, and overwhelmingly calm and peaceful,\u201d he nevertheless insisted on NY1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The imposition of the curfew had been announced a few hours earlier by the mayor and New York state governor Andrew Cuomo after protests and looting during the weekend \u2014 notably in the trendy SoHo district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor tweeted late Monday that \u201cprotesters were overwhelmingly peaceful today\u201d but that some people were out to damage property and steal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe support peaceful protest in this city. But right now it\u2019s time to go home,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people are out tonight not to protest but to destroy property and hurt others \u2014 and those people are being arrested.
