{"id":71987,"date":"2020-04-28T09:55:16","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T01:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=71987"},"modified":"2020-04-28T09:57:50","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T01:57:50","slug":"covid-19-world-should-listened-to-who-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=71987","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: \u2018World should  have listened to WHO\u2019 &#8211; director"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1-92.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1-92.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GENEVA, April 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The World Health Organization chief said that the agency had sounded the highest level of alarm over the novel coronavirus early on, but lamented that not all countries had heeded its advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pointed out that the WHO warned the COVID-19 outbreak constituted a \u2018Public Health Emergency of International Concern\u2019 on Jan 30, when there were only 82 cases registered outside China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world should have listened to WHO then carefully,\u201d he told a virtual press briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organisation has faced scathing criticism from US President Donald Trump, who earlier this month suspended Washington&#8217;s funding after accusing WHO of downplaying the seriousness of the outbreak and kowtowing to China, where the novel coronavirus first surfaced late last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has provided no evidence to support his claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tedros insisted that the UN health agency had provided sound advice from the beginning \u201cbased on the best science and evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he stressed though that \u201cwe do not have any mandate to force countries&#8230; to take our advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the WHO announced on Jan 30 that the novel coronavirus represented \u201cthe highest level of emergency&#8230; every country could have triggered all its public health measures,\u201d Tedros pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that suffices the importance of listening to WHO&#8217;s advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe advised the whole world to implement a comprehensive public health approach, and we said find, test, isolate, and do contact tracing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can check for yourselves: countries who followed that are in a better position than others.
