{"id":69675,"date":"2020-04-12T13:07:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T05:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=69675"},"modified":"2020-04-12T13:07:04","modified_gmt":"2020-04-12T05:07:04","slug":"world-bank-expects-covid-19-to-leave-quite-an-impact-on-malaysias-gdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=69675","title":{"rendered":"World Bank expects COVID-19 to leave quite an impact on Malaysia&#8217;s GDP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; Malaysia\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) is\u00a0projected to contract by 0.1 per cent to 4.6 per cent this year\u00a0amid negative impact brought by\u00a0COVID-19, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its senior economist, finance, competitiveness, and innovation global practice,&nbsp;Smita Kuriakose, said the impact on Malaysia\u2019 economy was likely to be&nbsp;large&nbsp;looking due to&nbsp;COVID-19\u2019s&nbsp;adverse impact on foreign direct investment (FDI), commodities and&nbsp;tourism as well as&nbsp;domestic shocks due to&nbsp;the Movement Control Order (MCO).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia is also&nbsp;among&nbsp;the economies highest connected to global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, she said, trade had&nbsp;declined on par with most acute phase of the global financial crisis in&nbsp;2008\/2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the coronavirus outbreak started up to&nbsp;March 23, there was&nbsp;the largest outflow from the emerging markets ever recorded at US$83 billion, while global direct foreign&nbsp;investment was likely to drop&nbsp;by 30 to 40 per cent this year, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, 75 million jobs are at risk in the travel and tourism sector, with two-thirds being&nbsp;in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must acknowledge&nbsp;the fact that&nbsp;recovery would not be uniform&nbsp;across sectors and even regions,\u201d she said during&nbsp;a&nbsp;web-based seminar&nbsp;hosted by not-for-profit think-tank&nbsp;Research For Social Advancement (REFSA) titled \u201cFlattening the Recession Curve: Saving SMEs and Preserving Jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said ample initiatives need to be launched to&nbsp;helping the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) amid the disruption in supply chain and demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Smita,&nbsp;local SMEs particularly&nbsp;still lag&nbsp;behind in utilising the digital platform and this needs&nbsp;to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While&nbsp;the government had&nbsp;shown its commitment to react quickly and allocated substantial resources to respond to the outbreak, recovery was&nbsp;likely to take&nbsp;years, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced&nbsp;its latest GDP growth projection for 2020 last week, estimating&nbsp;a range of&nbsp;-2 per cent&nbsp;to 0.5 per cent. This is down from 2019\u2019s 4.3 per cent growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce&nbsp;people\u2019s confidence is restored,&nbsp;economic activity will rebound.
