{"id":68820,"date":"2020-04-07T10:11:34","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T02:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=68820"},"modified":"2020-04-07T10:12:49","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T02:12:49","slug":"covid-19-us-navy-captain-fired-for-voicing-virus-concern-tests-positive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=68820","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: US navy captain fired for voicing virus concern tests positive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/US-navy-captain-fired-for-voicing-virus-concern-tests-positive-report.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/US-navy-captain-fired-for-voicing-virus-concern-tests-positive-report.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, April 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The US naval commander whose widely publicized plea for help for his coronavirus-affected crew led to his<br>dismissal has reportedly himself tested positive for the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captain Brett Crozier\u2019s COVID-19 test result was reported by the New York Times, just hours after US Defense Secretary Mark Esper defended the<br>captain\u2019s firing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esper told ABC that Navy Secretary Thomas Modly had \u201cmade a tough decision, tough call\u201d in deciding to fire Crozier from his command of the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt, now docked in Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firing was widely condemned as a callous and unfair punishment of a<br>respected officer who was looking out for the welfare of his crew when he<br>implored his superiors to let him quickly vacate the ship after it docked in<br>Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some senior Pentagon officials said Crozier erred by letting his plea<br>go public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crozier \u201cdemonstrated extremely poor judgment in the middle of a crisis,\u201d<br>needlessly worrying family members and undermining the chain of command, Modly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esper told CNN that more than half the Roosevelt\u2019s 4,800-member crew had now been tested for the coronavirus. In all, 155 sailors tested positive but none required hospitalization, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, speaking in a news conference Saturday, supported the dismissal. \u201cHe shouldn\u2019t be talking that way in a letter,\u201d he said of Crozier. \u201cI thought it was terrible what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Times, in reporting Crozier\u2019s test result, cited two of his former<br>classmates at the US Naval Academy. It said he had begun exhibiting symptoms before leaving the ship on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats have also sharply criticized the dismissal. Joe Biden, the leading Democratic candidate for president, condemned the firing on Sunday, telling ABC it was \u201cclose to criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think he should have a commendation rather than be fired,\u201dthe former<br>vice president said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a statement from Democratic leaders of the House Armed Services<br>Committee said Crozier might not have handled the matter perfectly, but that his dismissal was an \u201coverreaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military has been called to help the fight against the coronavirus<br>inside the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said Saturday that 1,000 military personnel, mostly doctors and<br>nurses, would be deployed to help in New York City, the epicenter of the US<br>outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troops have already been helping out at the Javits Convention Center, which has been transformed into an enormous hospital. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, April 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The US naval commander whose widely publicized plea for help for his coronavirus-affected crew led to hisdismissal has reportedly himself tested positive for the disease.
