{"id":68528,"date":"2020-04-04T11:06:21","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T03:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=68528"},"modified":"2020-04-04T11:07:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-04T03:07:17","slug":"covid-19-rwandan-soldiers-arrested-for-rape-brutalities-during-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=68528","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Rwandan soldiers arrested for rape, brutalities during lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/africa\/Rwandan-soldiers-arrested-for-rape-brutalities-during-lockdown-913300?gallery=1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/721\/72176199.295.jpg\" alt=\"Victims have been talking to military prosecutors about the abuses\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em>Victims have been talking to military prosecutors about the abuses<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KIGALI, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Rwanda\u2019s government has ordered the arrest of five soldiers accused of raping women and brutalizing civilians during the coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents of a slum in the capital, Kigali accused the soldiers of the sexual abuse as they enforce a nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rwanda Defence Force has said it has started investigating the alleged incidences of torture, forced sex and extortion by its officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One victim of rape told reporters that on March 26 an armed soldier forced his way into her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The said soldier according to the woman beat up her husband and when she tried intervene the soldier raped her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to residents of the Nyarutarama community, the soldiers did not only rape women and beat up male residents but also stole from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver ten women have been subjected into forced sex,\u201d the area leader said adding that the Military authority has been informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lt.Col. Innocent Munyengango the Defence and Military spokesperson told reporters that some culprits have been apprehended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been some casualties from the lockdown in Rwanda with two people reportedly shot dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police said those killed attempted attacking officers when they were caught walking outside and not obeying the lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Rwandans have complained abut the brutalities of some security officers in the wake of the lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rwanda has extended its lockdown further into middle of April hoping that helps to prevent further spread of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial two-week lockdown was to end on Saturday, April 4, but will now go through April 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister of Health, Dr Daniel Ngamije said the extension will help in tracing people who came in contact with confirmed cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese 15 days will help us trace few remaining people who came into contact with confirmed cases,\u201d he said in an interview with the national broadcaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country has now recorded 84 cases and was the first in Africa to announce a lockdown. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Victims have been talking to military prosecutors about the abuses KIGALI, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Rwanda\u2019s government has ordered the arrest of five soldiers accused of raping women and brutalizing civilians during the coronavirus lockdown.
