{"id":6361,"date":"2019-01-30T14:29:37","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T06:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10.0.5.12\/nnn\/?p=6361"},"modified":"2019-02-04T14:32:13","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T06:32:13","slug":"five-arrested-over-brazil-dam-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=6361","title":{"rendered":"Five arrested over Brazil dam disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan&nbsp;30&nbsp;(NNN-BERNAMA-XINHUA) &#8212; Brazilian authorities on Tuesday detained five people in connection with the iron-ore waste dam collapse last week, which left scores dead and caused&nbsp;an environmental catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspects comprised three employees of mining giant Vale, which owns the mine at Brumadinho in the southeast state of Minas Gerais, and two sub-contracted engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xinhua news agency reported the five would be in police custody for 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The employees &#8220;were directly involved in the licensing of the dam that collapsed,&#8221; and the engineers &#8220;had declared the dam was stable,&#8221; state news agency Agencia Brasil said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While picking up the suspects, the police also seized loads of documents as evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is hard to believe that a dam with this size &#8212; run by one of the world&#8217;s biggest mining firms &#8212; can burst unexpectedly, without any sign of vulnerability,&#8221; said Perla Saliba Brito, the federal judge who ordered the arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dam was reportedly equipped with sensors capable of detecting signs of structural weakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident marks the second tailing dam collapse in just three years at a Vale-owned mining operation in Brazil, flooding communities and fields with toxic sludge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2015, a tailings dam partly-owned by Vale ruptured in Mariana, also in Minas Gerais, destroying an entire community and killing 19 people.
