{"id":61507,"date":"2020-02-11T10:53:42","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=61507"},"modified":"2020-02-11T10:53:43","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:53:43","slug":"syria-war-government-shellfire-kills-5-turkish-soldiers-in-idlib","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=61507","title":{"rendered":"Syria war: Government shellfire kills 5 Turkish soldiers in Idlib"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.brudirect.com\/images\/news\/20200211_middleeast.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Turkey has sent hundreds of troops to Idlib to reinforce its observation posts<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0ANKARA, Feb 11 (NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212;<\/strong> Five Turkish soldiers have been killed and five others wounded by Syrian army artillery fire in north-western Syria, Turkey&#8217;s defence ministry says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shells reportedly struck a Turkish observation post at Taftanaz airbase in opposition-held Idlib province, where pro-government forces are mounting a major offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkish forces retaliated by shelling Syrian army targets in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week ago, eight Turkish military personnel died in a similar attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syrian soldiers, supported by Iran-backed militiamen and Russian air strikes, have captured dozens of towns and villages in Idlib since December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost 700,000 civilians, the vast majority of them women and children, have been displaced by the fighting, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey, which backs the Syrian opposition and fears a massive influx of refugees, has given the Syrian army until the end of February to pull back behind 12 Turkish observation posts. These were set up in Idlib under a 2017 agreement with Russia and Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also sent hundreds of tanks and thousands of soldiers to reinforce the posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Turkish defence ministry statement said the five soldiers were killed on Monday in an &#8220;intense assault that targeted our elements sent as reinforcement to the region with an aim to prevent clashes in Idlib, ensure our border security and stop migration and human tragedy&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Targets identified in the region were immediately targeted intensively&#8230; The targets were destroyed and the blood of our martyrs was not left on the ground,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkish media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitoring group, reported that Syrian pro-government forces shelled Taftanaz airbase, about 13km north-east of the city of Idlib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SOHR said six Turkish soldiers and four Syrian rebels were killed in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Videos posted online purportedly showed helicopters transferring the wounded soldiers across the border to hospitals in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkish government spokesman Fahrettin Altun wrote on Twitter: &#8220;Turkey retaliated against the attack to destroy all enemy targets and avenging our fallen troops.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The war criminal, who ordered today&#8217;s heinous attack, targeted the entire international community, not just Turkey,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no immediate comment from the Syrian army or government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Monday, seven Turkish soldiers and a civilian contractor died when shells hit a position in Idlib, Turkey&#8217;s defence ministry said. In response, Turkish forces &#8220;neutralised&#8221; 76 Syrian soldiers, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syrian state media said there were no casualties. But the SOHR reported that at least 13 soldiers were killed by Turkish fire in Idlib, Latakia and Hama provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two days later, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to drive back Syrian troops in Idlib unless they withdrew behind Turkey&#8217;s observation posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We hope that the process of the regime pulling back behind our observation posts is completed in the month of February,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If the regime does not pull back during this time, Turkey will have to do this job itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Syrian army vowed to continue its assault and subsequently recaptured the major town of Saraqeb, south of Taftanaz, which straddles the intersection of the strategic M4 and M5 highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Syrian armed forces command has called the presence of Turkish forces on Syrian territory an &#8220;illegal and a flagrant act of aggression&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that the number of civilians displaced by the crisis is &#8220;spiralling out of control&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spokesman David Swanson said that 689,000 of the three million people living in opposition-held Idlib had fled their homes since Dec 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has compounded an already dire humanitarian situation on the ground caused by the displacement of more than 400,000 other people between April and August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN human rights office has verified the deaths of 180 civilians since  Jan 1. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkey has sent hundreds of troops to Idlib to reinforce its observation posts \u00a0ANKARA, Feb 11 (NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212; Five Turkish soldiers have been killed and five others wounded by Syrian army artillery fire in north-western Syria, Turkey&#8217;s defence ministry says.
