{"id":59859,"date":"2020-01-27T11:33:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T03:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=59859"},"modified":"2020-01-27T11:33:47","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T03:33:47","slug":"holocaust-dutch-pm-apologises-over-failure-to-protect-jews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=59859","title":{"rendered":"Holocaust: Dutch PM apologises over failure to protect Jews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.brudirect.com\/images\/news\/20200127_europe.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Mark Rutte, left, lay a wreath at the Holocaust remembrance event in Amsterdam<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0AMSTERDAM, Jan 27 (NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212;<\/strong>Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has apologised on behalf of his country&#8217;s government for its failure to protect Jews during World War Two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutte said that while some Dutch officials resisted during the Nazi occupation, too many simply did as they were told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the first such apology to be offered by a Dutch prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 102,000 of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust came from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutte made the remarks at a Holocaust remembrance event in Amsterdam, ahead of the 75th anniversary on Monday of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the last remaining survivors among us, I apologise on behalf of the government for the actions of the government at the time,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I do so, realising that no word can describe something as enormous and awful as the Holocaust.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an admission long sought by the Netherlands&#8217; Jewish community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 75% of the 140,000 Jews who lived in the Netherlands before the Holocaust were murdered by German Nazis and their local collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dutch governments in the past had apologised for the way Jews who survived the Holocaust were treated upon returning from concentration camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Rutte is the first to acknowledge the country&#8217;s role in persecuting Jews and other minorities during the Nazi occupation. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Rutte, left, lay a wreath at the Holocaust remembrance event in Amsterdam \u00a0AMSTERDAM, Jan 27 (NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212;Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has apologised on behalf of his country&#8217;s government for its failure to protect Jews during World War Two.
