{"id":58851,"date":"2020-01-17T15:53:28","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T07:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58851"},"modified":"2020-01-17T15:53:30","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T07:53:30","slug":"bolivia-exiled-ex-pres-morales-retracts-vow-to-create-armed-civilian-militia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58851","title":{"rendered":"Bolivia: Exiled ex-pres Morales retracts vow to create armed civilian militia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"http:\/\/scd.en.rfi.fr\/sites\/english.filesrfi\/images\/afp\/8523a3cc326d13d52c0a4c91bb98730db2737d33.jpg\" alt=\"Evo Morales, who spoke to AFP in Buenos Aires in December, says he will return to Bolivia to lead his Movement for Socialism party's presidential election campaign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LA PAZ, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Exiled former Bolivian president Evo Morales backtracked from a vow to create armed civilian militias similar to notorious &#8216;colectivos&#8217; in Venezuela, were he to be allowed back to his homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales caused outrage with his comments last weekend, with interim President Jeanine Anez saying his words proved that &#8220;peace, reconciliation and democracy were never options for him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 60-year-old former trade union leader resigned in November after three weeks of violent protests against his controversial re-election in a poll the Organisation of American States said was rigged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He initially fled to take up asylum in Mexico before moving on to Argentina last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday he told Bolivia&#8217;s Radio Kawsachum Coca (RKC) &#8211;&nbsp;owned by the coca planters union to which he belongs &#8211; that should he return to his homeland &#8220;we will have to organise popular armed militias, as Venezuela has done.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But on Thursday he took to Twitter to retract those comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A few days ago some of my words were published about the formation of militias. I retract those,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My most profound conviction has been the defence of life and peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales&#8217;&nbsp;words brought condemnation from the UN special envoy to Bolivia, Jean Arnault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, Arnault said the UN &#8220;joins in the rejection&#8221; of Morales&#8217; statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales tweeted that he didn&#8217;t want &#8220;anything that I&#8217;ve said to be used as a pretext to persecute and repress my brothers and sisters.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His tweet came as soldiers entered the restive region of Chapare, where a few days ago Morales supporters began protests against the interim government, to destroy illegal coca leaf plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales has said he intends to return to Bolivia to lead his Movement for Socialism&#8217;s presidential election campaign ahead of May&#8217;s vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party&#8217;s candidate has yet to be announced but the interim government has banned Morales from standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An arrest warrant has been issued for Morales should he return to Bolivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is accused of terrorism and sedition over an audio recording in which he allegedly encourages his supporters to lay siege to major cities. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<em>e<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LA PAZ, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Exiled former Bolivian president Evo Morales backtracked from a vow to create armed civilian militias similar to notorious &#8216;colectivos&#8217; in Venezuela, were he to be allowed back to his homeland.
