{"id":58791,"date":"2020-01-17T12:14:37","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T04:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58791"},"modified":"2020-01-17T12:14:39","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T04:14:39","slug":"auto-tariff-threat-not-mentioned-in-us-talks-eu-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58791","title":{"rendered":"Auto tariff threat not mentioned in US talks: EU commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-69.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-69.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; US threats to put tariffs on European autos did not come up during talks this week with American trade officials in Washington, EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hogan\u2019s remarks came hours after Germany\u2019s defense minister confirmed a<br>media report that Washington had threatened 25 percent duties on autos,<br>demanding that three EU nations increase pressure on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was not mentioned, it was hardly mentioned,\u201d Hogan told reporters in<br>Washington. \u201cI think it should be good news for Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany, France and Britain this week formally accused Iran of breaching a multilateral 2015 nuclear pact, a week after US President Donald Trump<br>secretly demanded that they do so, brandishing the threat of auto tariffs if<br>they did not, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tehran resumed parts of its nuclear program after Trump unilaterally<br>withdrew from the deal in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Thursday, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said during a news conference that the \u201cthreat\u2026 does exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Hogan said Thursday he had learned of the reported threats through the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI certainly haven\u2019t been briefed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump in 2018 began threatening to put tariffs on auto imports to defend<br>US automakers, which alarmed Japanese and EU automakers in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Japanese automakers appeared to be in the clear after Washington and<br>Tokyo struck a new trade accord in September of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a deadline for Trump to make a decision on the auto tariffs appeared<br>to lapse in November without comment from the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That month, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross \u2014 who oversaw the drafting of a report on whether US national security requirements justified such auto tariffs \u2014 raised the possibility that no tariffs would be imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hogan also said Thursday that US officials were not satisfied so far with<br>EU efforts to resolve a dispute over subsidies to the aircraft maker Airbus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States in October slapped tariffs on $7.5 billion in European<br>exports after the World Trade Organization ruled that the subsidies were<br>impermissible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut at least there\u2019s an opinion expressed in relation to the proposal,\u201d<br>Hogan said, adding that Brussels was now waiting for a Trump counter-offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we share is an objective of having a comprehensive outcome in<br>relation to civil aviation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture is still a principal stumbling block, according to Hogan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he said Europeans had made good on commitments to increase imports of US soybeans and corn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the request of the United States, we delivered,\u201d he said, even on the<br>\u201cvery sensitive issue\u201d of agriculture,\u201d Hogan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to respond in those positive ways.\u201d &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; US threats to put tariffs on European autos did not come up during talks this week with American trade officials in Washington, EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan said Thursday.
