{"id":58787,"date":"2020-01-17T12:04:22","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T04:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58787"},"modified":"2020-01-17T12:04:24","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T04:04:24","slug":"historic-trump-impeachment-trial-begins-in-senate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58787","title":{"rendered":"Historic Trump impeachment trial begins in Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-66.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-66.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The historic impeachment trial of<br>Donald Trump opened Thursday in the US Senate, as lawmakers took a solemn oath to be \u201cimpartial\u201d in deciding whether to force the 45th US president from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For just the third time in American history, the hushed Senate chamber was<br>transformed into a court of impeachment, presided over by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who administered the oath to senators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Roberts, clad in a black robe, asked if they swore to deliver<br>\u201cimpartial justice\u201d according to the US Constitution, the 99 lawmakers<br>present \u2014 one was absent \u2014 responded in unison, with right hands raised: \u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in the day, in a deeply symbolic moment, the two articles of<br>impeachment \u2014 charging Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress \u2014 were read out on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHear ye, hear ye, hear ye,\u201d Senate Sergeant of Arms Michael Stenger said,<br>commanding senators to \u201ckeep silent, on pain of imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who will<br>serve as lead prosecutor for the trial, read the charges accusing Trump of<br>\u201chigh crimes and misdemeanors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has ridiculed the impeachment process for months, and he responded to the opening of the trial by once more branding it a \u201choax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it should go very quickly,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval<br>Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s totally partisan,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve got to go through a hoax, a phony<br>hoax put out by the Democrats so they can try and win an election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democratic-controlled House, voting along party lines, impeached Trump on Dec 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Trump\u2019s acquittal is widely expected in the Republican-dominated<br>Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required to convict and remove a<br>president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the swearing in, the Senate adjourned until 1 pm Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump is accused of abuse of power for withholding military aid to Ukraine<br>and a White House meeting for the country\u2019s president in exchange for an<br>investigation into his potential presidential election rival Democrat Joe<br>Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office concluded in a report<br>released Thursday that the White House had violated federal law by putting a hold on the congressionally approved funds for Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaithful execution of the law does not permit the President to substitute<br>his own policy priorities for those that Congress has enacted into law,\u201d the<br>congressional watchdog said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second article of impeachment relates to Trump\u2019s refusal to provide<br>witnesses and documents to House impeachment investigators in defiance of congressional subpoenas. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The historic impeachment trial ofDonald Trump opened Thursday in the US Senate, as lawmakers took a solemn oath to be \u201cimpartial\u201d in deciding whether to force the 45th US president from office.
