{"id":58746,"date":"2020-01-17T09:52:45","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T01:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58746"},"modified":"2020-01-17T09:52:47","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T01:52:47","slug":"philippines-says-danger-high-despite-volcano-lull","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58746","title":{"rendered":"Philippines says danger high despite volcano \u2018lull\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-62.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1-62.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MANILA, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The threat of the Philippines\u2019 Taal volcano unleashing a potentially catastrophic eruption remains high, authorities warned, saying it was showing dangerous signs despite a \u201clull\u201d in spewing ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scores of earthquakes rattle the region daily and large fissures are opening up in the ground, which means the magma that would fuel a major eruption is still flowing beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities are struggling to keep evacuees, some 50,000 of whom fled to shelters after Taal burst to life Sunday, away from the danger zone around the volcano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are trying to get back to homes they left in a hurry to get a change of clothes, feed livestock and pets and check on properties damaged by the fissures or covered with a thick layer of ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease allow us to observe the lull period for now. We are studying what that means,\u201d Maria Antonia Bornas, a scientist from the Philippines\u2019 seismology agency told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA long lull could be just a break from volcanic activity,\u201d she said. \u201cThe danger remains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities have warned since Sunday that the volcano, which sits south of Manila and is one of the country\u2019s most active, could let loose a powerful eruption in \u201chours or days\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taal\u2019s last eruption was in 1977, but it has a long history of activity.
