{"id":58567,"date":"2020-01-15T10:29:07","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T02:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58567"},"modified":"2020-01-15T10:29:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T02:29:09","slug":"sudan-government-forces-quell-armed-protest-by-security-agents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58567","title":{"rendered":"Sudan government forces quell armed protest by security agents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/africa\/Sudan-government-forces-quell-armed-protest-by-security-agents-837943?gallery=1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/285\/28577930.295.jpg\" alt=\"Members of the Rapid Support Forces are seen near the area where gunmen opened fire\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em>Members of the Rapid Support Forces are seen near the area where gunmen opened fire<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KHARTOUM, Jan 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Sudanese government forces have managed to retake all intelligence buildings in the capital Khartoum held by security agents in revolt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The armed ex-security agents linked to Sudan&#8217;s toppled ruler Omar al-Bashir surrendered late on Tuesday after negotiations with their leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence was the biggest confrontation so far between the old guard and supporters of the new administration, which helped topple al-Bashir in April after 30 years in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After more than 15 hours of a standoff &#8230; the Sudanese armed forces said the situation has been resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It looks like the situation, for now, has been contained.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, heavy gunfire erupted in Khartoum after the agents, who had belonged to a feared security service, rejected the financial compensation offered after their unit was disbanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Violence broke out at the Directorate of General Intelligence Service office, formerly known as the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) &#8211; the powerful security arm of al-Bashir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a televised statement, Information Minister Faisal Mohamed Saleh said the gunmen were former employees upset at the terms they had been offered upon their dismissal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were no immediate reports of casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities had closed Sudan&#8217;s airspace for five hours as a precautionary measure after the start of the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gunmen were angry after being told to either retire or join the notorious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The events that occurred today are under control,&#8221; tweeted Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok. &#8220;We renew our confidence in the armed forces to contain the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NISS security agents were at the forefront of cracking down on protesters during the nationwide uprising that erupted against al-Bashir in December 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The army deposed al-Bashir four months later and the country&#8217;s new authorities pledged to reform NISS &#8211; a key demand of the uprising that called for his removal from power. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Rapid Support Forces are seen near the area where gunmen opened fire KHARTOUM, Jan 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Sudanese government forces have managed to retake all intelligence buildings in the capital Khartoum held by security agents in revolt.
