{"id":58012,"date":"2020-01-10T09:53:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T01:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58012"},"modified":"2020-01-10T09:53:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T01:53:41","slug":"indonesia-equips-forest-rangers-with-guns-in-illegal-logging-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58012","title":{"rendered":"Indonesia equips forest rangers with guns in illegal logging battle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/forest.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/forest.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BANDA ACEH (Indonesia), Jan 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Forest rangers in<br>Indonesia\u2019s Aceh province will be equipped with guns in the battle against<br>illegal logging, an environmental agency official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jungle-clad region at the tip of Sumatra island loses some 32,000<br>hectares of more than two million hectares of forest annually<br>due to deforestation, including from illegal timber activities, authorities<br>said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the risks of fighting criminal elements had soared with many loggers<br>now carrying firearms, said Aceh environmental agency head Syahrial, who goes by one name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing on duty in the forest without firearms is not only risky but it\u2019s<br>also not effective when you\u2019re facing illegal loggers (who are usually<br>armed),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 120 rangers would be given pistols, rifles and ammunition at a cost<br>of about 1.39 billion rupiah, Syahrial said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve coordinated with local police with respect to procurement and<br>permits,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun ownership is uncommon in Indonesia outside of military or police<br>personnel and obtaining a personal licence can be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aceh\u2019s forest rangers once had guns but they were confiscated after a<br>separatist insurgency broke out in the 1970s. The conflict ended with a 2005<br>peace deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s decision comes after Aceh earlier announced that poachers who<br>threaten endangered orangutans, tigers and other wildlife could receive up to 100 lashes from a rattan cane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While public whipping is common in Indonesia\u2019s Aceh \u2014 the only region in<br>the world\u2019s biggest Muslim majority country that imposes Islamic law \u2014 it is usually reserved for morality crimes. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BANDA ACEH (Indonesia), Jan 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Forest rangers inIndonesia\u2019s Aceh province will be equipped with guns in the battle againstillegal logging, an environmental agency official said.
