{"id":58008,"date":"2020-01-10T09:39:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T01:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58008"},"modified":"2020-01-10T09:39:17","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T01:39:17","slug":"bolivia-opens-probe-into-600-former-morales-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=58008","title":{"rendered":"Bolivia opens probe into 600 former Morales officials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdnuploads.aa.com.tr\/uploads\/Contents\/2020\/01\/08\/thumbs_b_c_a47c947d29c6388fec98dab33f03cd34.jpg?v=221532\" alt=\"Bolivia: Interim gov't to probe nearly 600 ex-officials\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Bolivia&#8217;s interim government led by Jeanine Anez <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LA PAZ, Jan 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8211;\u2013 Bolivia\u2019s interim government said it would launch a corruption probe into nearly 600 officials of the former administration, including ex-president Evo Morales<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been decided to initiate investigations against 592 former officials,\u201d Mathias Kutsch, the justice ministry\u2019s chief anti-corruption investigator, told a news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The probe will include Morales, vice-president Alvaro Garcia, ministers, vice-ministers, heads of cabinet and public administration officials, Kutsch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the investigation would identify those who had \u201ccommitted corruption crimes, who diverted public resources, and chiefly, who diverted them to other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales, Garcia and various other members of the government who resigned after the former president stepped down amid protests in the South American country in November have sought asylum abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of around 10 former officials are sheltering inside the Mexican ambassador\u2019s residence in La Paz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a separate move, Interior Minister Arturo Murillo said Bolivian authorities had called on Interpol to arrest Morales to prevent him traveling to Chile where he has been invited to participate in a human rights forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have given the order for the activation by Interpol of the warrant we have drawn up against Evo Morales, given the news from Chile,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government in November issued a warrant for Morales\u2019 arrest should he return to Bolivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Twitter, Morales denied he had received an invitation from Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ex-president initially fled to Mexico but is now living in Argentina.
