{"id":56608,"date":"2019-12-28T13:00:47","date_gmt":"2019-12-28T05:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=56608"},"modified":"2019-12-28T13:16:05","modified_gmt":"2019-12-28T05:16:05","slug":"thai-ministers-sign-agreements-to-remove-two-traditional-medicines-from-narcotics-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=56608","title":{"rendered":"Thai Ministers Sign Agreements To Remove Two Traditional Medicines From Narcotics List"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BANGKOK, Dec 28 (NNN-TNA) &#8211; The Thai government is set to remove marijuana and kratom from the list of narcotics, paving the way for more effective medical uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kratom is a tropical tree, a Mitragyna speciosa, native to Southeast Asia, with leaves that contain compounds that can have psychotropic (mind-altering) effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, effects of high doses of kratom can include sedation, pain reduction, euphoria and cough suppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thai Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul and Justice Minister, Somsak Thepsutin, on Friday, signed two agreements in removing two Thai traditional medicines from Category 5 narcotics list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If marijuana and kratom plants are removed from the narcotics list, their medical properties will benefit Thailand&#8217;s economy and the future of health science, said Anutin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health Minister Anutin also said, the two plants can be used for medical research and be promoted to help, commercially, reduce imports of medical products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Minister Somsak said, his ministry will quickly study into legalisation of the two plants, as they can be of economic use to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A draft bill on marijuana use for medical purposes is being considered by the House of Representatives, said Somsak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several public hospitals in Thailand have already opened medical marijuana clinics.&#8211; NNN-TNA  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BANGKOK, Dec 28 (NNN-TNA) &#8211; The Thai government is set to remove marijuana and kratom from the list of narcotics, paving the way for more effective medical uses.
