{"id":56372,"date":"2019-12-26T14:54:54","date_gmt":"2019-12-26T06:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=56372"},"modified":"2019-12-26T15:07:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-26T07:07:53","slug":"update-measles-death-toll-in-samoa-rises-to-81","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=56372","title":{"rendered":"Update: Measles Death Toll In Samoa Rises To 81"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SUVA, Dec 26 (NNN-RNZ) &#8211; The Samoan government confirmed, one more death, in the island nation&#8217;s measles epidemic on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 81, since the measles outbreak started in mid-Oct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Samoa Observer newspaper on Thursday (today), the Samoan Ministry of Health said, the death of a child under five years old was reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death of measles to 81, mostly of children under five years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry said that a total of 5,612 measles cases have been recorded by the Disease Surveillance Team so far, with just nine cases reported in the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, a total of 43 people, 10 of them in critical condition, are hospitalised with measles on the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Wednesday, about 95 percent of all eligible people in Samoa have been vaccinated against measles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that is transmitted via droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of infected persons.
