{"id":55910,"date":"2019-12-22T15:29:55","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T07:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=55910"},"modified":"2019-12-22T15:33:14","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T07:33:14","slug":"west-african-nations-rename-common-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=55910","title":{"rendered":"West African Nations Rename Common Currency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NAIROBI, Dec 22 (NNN-KBC) &#8211; Eight West African countries will rename their common currency, CFA franc, to &#8220;Eco,&#8221; in what Cote d&#8217;Ivoire&#8217;s President, Alassane Ouattara, called a &#8220;historic&#8221; move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ouattara made his remarks at a press conference, in the country&#8217;s southern city of Abidjan, with French President, Emmanuel Macron, by his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eco will be pegged to the euro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CFA franc is used in 14 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with a combined population of about 150 million and around 235 billion U.S. dollars of gross domestic product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight African countries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d&#8217;Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, will use the renamed currency.
