{"id":55472,"date":"2019-12-19T11:56:16","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T03:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=55472"},"modified":"2019-12-19T11:56:18","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T03:56:18","slug":"peru-embattled-opposition-leader-fujimori-to-take-political-break-ahead-of-new-court-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=55472","title":{"rendered":"Peru: Embattled opposition leader Fujimori to take political break ahead of new court hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Perus-Fujimori-in-political-pause-ahead-of-new-court-hearing.jpeg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Perus-Fujimori-in-political-pause-ahead-of-new-court-hearing.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LIMA, Dec 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Peruvian opposition leader Keiko Fujimori, released last month after more than a year in pre-trial custody, announced she would take a break from politics, before a new detention hearing in her corruption case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fujimori, 44, is accused of accepting $1.2 million in illicit funding for her 2011 election campaign from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hearing to decide on a potential new 36-month pretrial detention term will be held on Dec 26, the day after Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am going to pause my political activities because my priority is and will always be my family,\u201d Fujimori said in a televised statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will face this process as a whole family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After her release in November, she theoretically had time to campaign for presidential elections set for July 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Peru\u2019s most popular politician, she rejected accusations that she was a flight risk and posed a danger of obstruction to prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez\u2019s investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 44-year-old eldest daughter of disgraced former president Alberto Fujimori was taken into pretrial detention in October 2018 for allegedly interfering with the anti-corruption investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her release last month by the Constitutional Court came in a ruling related only to her detention and which has no bearing on the corruption case against her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday Fujimori said there is \u201cno flight risk because the judges determined it\u201d and the Constitutional Court that released her ruled out the presumed dangers of obstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the most perverse gift that I have ever received in my life,\u201d the leader of the right-wing Popular Force party said of the new pre-trial detention hearing which awaits her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fujimori added she was worried for her two daughters and keeping them in mind would give her strength to face the judicial process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are going to show this is persecution, and we will also show our truth,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perez believes there is new information against Fujimori, which he believes would increase the risk of flight and obstruction of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prosecutor is seeking to file multiple new accusations against her, including money laundering and obstruction of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Odebrecht has admitted paying at least $29 million to Peruvian officials since 2004, and bribing four former Peruvian presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Odebrecht scandal stretches far beyond Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latin America\u2019s largest construction firm has admitted to paying hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to win juicy contracts in 12 countries. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LIMA, Dec 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Peruvian opposition leader Keiko Fujimori, released last month after more than a year in pre-trial custody, announced she would take a break from politics, before a new detention hearing in her corruption case.
