{"id":52093,"date":"2019-11-26T11:55:32","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T03:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=52093"},"modified":"2019-11-26T12:00:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T04:00:25","slug":"turkeys-erdogan-in-qatar-on-first-arab-trip-since-syria-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=52093","title":{"rendered":"Turkey&#8217;s Erdogan In Qatar On First Arab Trip Since Syria Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>DOHA, Nov 26 (NNN-QNA) &#8211; Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, arrived in Qatar Monday, on his first official trip to an Arab country, since Ankara&#8217;s forces intervened in northeast Syria last month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ankara and Doha have grown closer since Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with their former Gulf ally more than two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Erdogan\u2019s visit comes at a critical time, amid signs of a possible breakthrough in the crisis between Qatar and its neighbours \u2014 in what could be pushing Ankara to further bolster its political and economic relations with Doha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdogan will attend the fifth meeting of the Qatar-Turkey Higher Strategic Committee, at the invitation of Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two countries are expected to sign a number of deals during Erdogan\u2019s third visit to Qatar, since the Saudi-led blockade began in Jun, 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdogan is also expected to visit a Turkish military base, where around 5,000 troops have been stationed since the Saudi-led blockade, amid reports that Qatar intends to buy 100 Turkish tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doha declared its support for Ankara, after it launched an offensive on Oct 9, against a Syrian Kurdish militia, but Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, condemned Turkey\u2019s \u201caggression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andreas Krieg, a professor at King\u2019s College London, said, the Qataris were put in a \u201ctough situation\u201d when Turkey launched its operation against Syrian Kurdish forces, considered by Ankara to be \u201cterrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey acknowledged Turkey\u2019s right to defend itself, while disagreeing about the means and ways used by Ankara in pursuit of this objective,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Gulf crisis erupted, Turkey was at the forefront of nations supplying Qatar with food and services, bypassing the blockade imposed by the Saudi-led nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qatar last year announced a $15-billion loan to Turkey\u2019s fragile banking sector, and also gave a luxury jumbo jet \u2014 reportedly worth around $400 million \u2014 as a \u201cgift\u201d to Ankara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the decision by football teams from the Saudi-led bloc, to play at a tournament in Qatar, could herald a rapprochement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Saudi and UAE squads arrived on Monday, to compete in the Arabian Gulf tournament in Doha, from Nov 26 (today), despite their nations\u2019 two-year boycott of Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bahrain also said it would take part.&#8211; NNN-QNA <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DOHA, Nov 26 (NNN-QNA) &#8211; Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, arrived in Qatar Monday, on his first official trip to an Arab country, since Ankara&#8217;s forces intervened in northeast Syria last month.
