KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The government is putting in place enough checks and balances as well as reforms to ensure that there will be no repeat of a “1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB)”, said Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Media and Communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the reforms would safeguard the country under any government and ensure that they would not be able to establish another entity such as the 1MDB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Even if this government gets kicked out in the coming election, I hope and I think you must make it happen that the reforms cannot be rolled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“So, that is the thing that the government has done,” he said during a panel discussion at the Institutional Investors Council Malaysia (IIC) – Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC) Governance Convention 2019 here, today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, Kadir said corrective measures were also being taken to restructure poorly managed government-linked companies (GLCs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There are very good GLCs and also some very poorly managed GLCs. We have seen in the case of one or two — which are agencies rather than companies — where civil cases are being taken against the chairman, board members and senior management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u00a0think this should send a strong signal to the corporate sector, particularly the GLCs, that the government will not tolerate any hanky-panky in the management of these\u00a0companies,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With this development, Kadir said the government is making progress in fulfilling its promises made during the May 2018 general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said as of September this year, more than 100 from 400 promises has been fulfilled by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The outcome of nine by-elections, parliamentary and states since May 9 has been 50-50, PH won five, BN won four, so its equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We still have a couple of things to fulfill to make governance and integrity measures more concrete,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
