{"id":46807,"date":"2019-10-18T09:44:12","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T01:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46807"},"modified":"2019-10-18T09:44:14","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T01:44:14","slug":"catalan-protests-regions-president-urges-immediate-halt-to-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46807","title":{"rendered":"Catalan protests: Region&#8217;s President urges immediate halt to violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.brudirect.com\/images\/news\/20191017_europe.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BARCELONA (Spain),\u00a0Oct\u00a018\u00a0(NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212;<\/strong>The president of Spain&#8217;s Catalonia region has called for an immediate halt to violence, as protests continued for a third night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We condemn violence&#8230; This has to stop right now,&#8221; Quim Torra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, protesters set up burning barricades and hurled projectiles at police in Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous region in the north-east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters have reportedly been using an app known as Tsunami Democratic, which directs them to protest sites in Catalan cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spanish authorities say they are investigating who is co-ordinating the disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a televised statement, Torra said: &#8220;We will not permit incidents like those we are seeing in the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This has to stop right now. There is no reason nor justification for burning cars, nor any other vandalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torra, who advocates independence for Catalonia, was speaking after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez had made a direct appeal to him to condemn the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro-independence leaders &#8211; who control the Catalan regional government &#8211; said earlier they would keep pushing for a new referendum on secession from Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protests began after nine Catalan independence leaders were handed jail sentences of between nine and 13 years by Spain&#8217;s Supreme Court on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The separatists were convicted of sedition over their role in an independence referendum in 2017, which Spain said was illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another three were found guilty of disobedience and fined, but not jailed.
