{"id":46315,"date":"2019-10-14T16:11:09","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T08:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46315"},"modified":"2019-10-14T16:11:11","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T08:11:11","slug":"haze-worsens-in-palembang-visibility-drops-drastically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46315","title":{"rendered":"Haze worsens in Palembang, visibility drops drastically"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5>By Mohd Shukri Ishak<br><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>JAKARTA, Oct 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading\u00a0in Palembang city in southern Sumatra has reached\u00a0921, the worst ever registered in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The haze has caused visibility to drop to less than 150 metres, resulting in the closure of schools in the city which has a population of 1.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia&#8217;s&nbsp;National&nbsp;Disaster&nbsp;Mitigation Agency&#8217;s Centre of Data, Information and Public Relations head Agus Wibowo said the agency had deployed more than 8,000 personnel to put out forest fires and&nbsp;seven helicopters to conduct water bombing and cloud seeding operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A total of&nbsp;691 hotspots have been&nbsp;detected in the province, the highest among other provinces such as&nbsp;Riau, Jambi and several parts of Kalimantan,&#8221; he said in a statement issued today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agus said the worsening haze was due to the high volume of&nbsp;smoke brought in by winds from areas of Sumatra and Kalimantan that were seriously affected by the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, the winds from the northwest had brought the smoke haze from&nbsp;Kalimantan&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Sumatra affecting several&nbsp;neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 300,000 hectares of forests and plantations in Sumatra and Kalimantan have been destroyed by fires since January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to local media, flights at the&nbsp;Sultan Mahmud Badarudin II Airport, Palembang&nbsp;were delayed this morning due to poor visibility caused by the haze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mohd Shukri Ishak JAKARTA, Oct 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading\u00a0in Palembang city in southern Sumatra has reached\u00a0921, the worst ever registered in the area.
