{"id":46157,"date":"2019-10-14T09:14:39","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T01:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46157"},"modified":"2019-10-14T09:14:40","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T01:14:40","slug":"ecuador-president-orders-curfew-military-control-in-quito","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=46157","title":{"rendered":"Ecuador president orders curfew, military control in Quito"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Ecuador-president-orders-curfew-military-control-in-Quito.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Ecuador-president-orders-curfew-military-control-in-Quito.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>QUITO, Oct 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ecuador President Lenin Moreno<br>ordered the capital Quito and surrounding areas placed under curfew and<br>military control, as deadly protests against government austerity measures roiled the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order would \u201cfacilitate the work of public forces against intolerable<br>outbreaks of violence,\u201d he announced on Twitter, as clouds of smoke hung over the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have arranged for the Joint Command of the Armed Forces to immediately carry out necessary measures and operations,\u201d Moreno said in a brief national address, flanked by Vice President Otto Sonnenholzner and Defense Minister Oswaldo Jarrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restrictions in Quito, a city of 2.7 million, came on top of a state<br>of emergency Moreno had declared on Oct 3, deploying some 75,000 military and police and imposing a nighttime curfew in the vicinity of government buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Violence continued in Quito on Saturday (11th day of protest) even as the indigenous movement leading the protests over fuel price hikes reversed course and said it had accepted a proposal for direct talks with Moreno. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his address, Moreno thanked indigenous groups for agreeing to negotiations, but did not say when or where the talks would take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president stressed that he would restore \u201corder throughout Ecuador\u201d as<br>thousands of protesters thronged the streets of Quito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrators on Saturday ransacked and set fire to the building housing<br>the comptroller general\u2019s office. The building was shrouded in thick smoke<br>after being attacked with fire bombs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the prosecutor\u2019s office, 34 people were arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearby, protesters erected barricades in front of the National Assembly<br>building as police fired tear gas at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A television station and a newspaper office also came under attack, the outlets said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Teleamazonas TV channel interrupted its regular broadcast to air<br>images of broken windows, a burned vehicle and heavy police presence on the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor about half an hour we were under attack. They threw stones at us,<br>forced open the doors and threw Molotov cocktails,\u201d presenter Milton Perez<br>said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The station evacuated 25 employees, none of whom were hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Comercio newspaper reported on Twitter that its offices were attacked<br>by a \u201cgroup of unknowns.\u201d It did not provide further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protest leaders denied being involved in the attacks on the TV station or<br>the comptroller general\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have nothing to do with the events at the comptroller\u2019s office and<br>Teleamazonas,\u201d said CONAIE, the indigenous umbrella group which has been leading the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters did not immediately heed the curfew which went into effect at<br>3 pm, with security forces still struggling to impose order in some parts of the city as night fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstrations have left six people dead and nearly 2,100 wounded or<br>detained, according to the ombudsman\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Saturday CONAIE said it had agreed to hold talks with Moreno after<br>consulting with its members. On Friday the group had rejected the president\u2019s proposal to negotiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ecuador\u2019s indigenous groups make up a quarter of the country\u2019s 17.3<br>million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indigenous groups from disadvantaged communities in the Amazon and the Andes have spearheaded demands that Moreno reinstate fuel subsidies that were cut last week \u2014 part of a deal his government struck to obtain a $4.2 billion loan from the IMF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuel prices have more than doubled from October 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence has forced Moreno to relocate his government to Ecuador\u2019s<br>second city, Guayaquil, and has hit the oil industry hard with the Energy<br>Ministry suspending more than two-thirds of its distribution of crude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters seized three oil facilities in the Amazon earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreno is struggling with an economic crisis that he blames on waste and<br>corruption by the administration of his predecessor Rafael Correa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreno has accused Correa and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of an \u201cattempted coup d\u2019etat\u201d using indigenous groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maduro, a leftist firebrand whom Washington is seeking to oust, has<br>denounced allegations of involvement as absurd, but praised the \u201cpopular<br>insurrection\u201d against the IMF. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QUITO, Oct 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ecuador President Lenin Morenoordered the capital Quito and surrounding areas placed under curfew andmilitary control, as deadly protests against government austerity measures roiled the city.
