{"id":45761,"date":"2019-10-11T09:09:42","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T01:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=45761"},"modified":"2019-10-11T09:09:44","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T01:09:44","slug":"climate-protesters-try-to-occupy-london-city-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=45761","title":{"rendered":"Climate protesters try to \u2018occupy\u2019 London city airport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/assets.nst.com.my\/images\/articles\/esd2_1570713533.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">A protester lies on top of a British Airways plane at London City Airport<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LONDON, Oct 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; London police dragged away<br>several chanting and singing climate protesters who tried to<br>\u201coccupy\u201d an international airport serving the British capital\u2019s global<br>financial hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uniformed officers were seen dragging several Extinction Rebellion group<br>demonstrators from outside London City Airport, although there was no<br>immediate official tally of arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campaigners, some of them in business suits, also staged a sit-in on the<br>platform of the nearby overground train station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others unfurled the group\u2019s trademark pink banner showing an hour glass \u2014 a symbol of time running out to save the planet from a \u201cclimate emergency\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year-old group backed by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg is<br>spearheading a two-week global action that kicked off Monday with partial<br>shutdowns of traffic in cities stretching from Sydney to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Berlin, protesters blocked a bridge overlooking the Reichstag building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In London, airport officials said it has managed to remain \u201cfully open and<br>operational\u201d by limiting entrance to the main terminal to ticketed<br>passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe continue to work closely with the Metropolitan Police to ensure the<br>safe operation of the airport,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London police reported making 800 arrests in the first three days of<br>protests that included campaigners glueing themselves to the pavement and<br>chaining themselves to cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extinction Rebellion had announced it was planning a \u201cHong Kong-style\u201d<br>occupation of London City Airport because of the small hub\u2019s ongoing<br>expansion plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It lies some five kilometres east of the Canary Wharf<br>business district \u2014 one of Britain\u2019s main financial centres \u2014 and the<br>nearby bustling City of London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are in the streets to make our governments #ActNow and end their<br>complicity in the extermination of life,\u201d Extinction Rebellion tweeted as its<br>members were hauled away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s colourful but peaceful protests have managed to attract a mass<br>following since its creation by a group of UK academics studying the effects<br>of harmful carbon emissions on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its past big event in London in April managed to shut down central parts<br>of city for 11 days and led to more than 1,000 arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extinction Rebellion has vowed to continue targeting the airport until<br>Saturday evening \u2014 and to only wind down their global action at the end of<br>next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group wants governments to adopt policies that cut harmful emissions<br>to a net level of zero by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain has set itself the target of 2050. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A protester lies on top of a British Airways plane at London City Airport LONDON, Oct 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; London police dragged awayseveral chanting and singing climate protesters who tried to\u201coccupy\u201d an international airport serving the British capital\u2019s globalfinancial hub.
