{"id":45173,"date":"2019-10-06T12:29:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T04:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=45173"},"modified":"2019-10-06T12:29:03","modified_gmt":"2019-10-06T04:29:03","slug":"eu-presses-uk-to-resubmit-brexit-plan-as-end-game-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=45173","title":{"rendered":"EU presses UK to resubmit Brexit plan as end-game looms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/EU-presses-UK-to-resubmit-Brexit-plan-as-end-game-looms.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/EU-presses-UK-to-resubmit-Brexit-plan-as-end-game-looms-696x464.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BRUSSELS, Oct 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; British Prime Minister Boris Johnson<br>started phoning EU leaders Saturday to sell his proposals for a managed<br>Brexit, but he met with pressure to revise his offer \u2014 and to do so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finnish counterpart Antti Rinne \u2014 whose country currently holds the<br>rotating presidency of the European Union \u2014 said he told Johnson \u201cit is<br>important to find a solution within a week\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJohnson said he agreed with the timetable,\u201d Rinne added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted that he had spoken with Johnson by phone and told him \u201cimportant questions remain about the British proposals\u201d and \u201cthere is a lot of work to be done ahead\u201d of a crucial EU summit on Oct 17-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British leader was expected to call the leaders of other EU countries<br>in the wake of his proposals being given short shrift by Brussels after they<br>were submitted Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they stand, \u201cthe UK proposals do not provide a basis for concluding an<br>agreement,\u201d a European Commission spokeswoman underlined Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talks Friday between a top UK Brexit official, David Frost, and the EU team<br>headed by top negotiator Michel Barnier broke up without progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were to resume Monday, despite the UK having been keen for them to<br>continue through the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson on Saturday called his plan \u201ca practical compromise that gives<br>ground where necessary\u201d but has also previously suggested it was a broad<br>\u201clanding zone\u201d \u2014 which to Brussels suggests he might yet budge on issues it<br>finds unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in identical articles for the Brexit-backing British tabloids the<br>Sunday Express and the Sun on Sunday, Johnson said the bloc now needed to show \u201cits own willingness to do a deal that the UK Parliament can support\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey should be under no illusions or misapprehensions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will be no more dither or delay.
