{"id":43566,"date":"2019-09-24T11:41:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T03:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=43566"},"modified":"2019-09-24T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T03:41:51","slug":"french-parliament-to-mull-law-to-cut-consumer-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=43566","title":{"rendered":"French parliament to mull law to cut consumer waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/8-1.jpeg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/8-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PARIS, Sept 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; France\u2019s parliament will from Tuesday debate legislation seeking to move the country closer to its ambition of a low-waste future, forcing electronics firms to use second-hand materials and cutting down on plastic refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France, with its population of nearly 70 million, is a voracious consumer of natural resources, producing five tonnes of waste per person per year, according to the environment ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French Senate will begin three days of discussion on the bill before it is handed to the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, where President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s government has a large majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation would compel computer and cellphone repair shops to use second-hand materials, and oblige industries \u2014 including manufacturers of toys, building materials, cigarettes and cleaning products \u2014 to manage the waste these products generate as well as their packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law would also compel manufacturers to provide consumers, beginning in 2021, with information on how their newly-purchased product can be repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a report last year titled \u201cRoadmap for the Circular Economy\u201d, the French government outlined plans to halve the amount of non-hazardous waste sent to landfills by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe situation is clear: France has a long way to go\u2026 In 2014, the rate of recovery of household and similar waste was 39 percent \u2014 much lower than our German (65 percent) or Belgian (50 percent) neighbours,\u201d the report said. \u201cThe rest, half of which is organic waste, is therefore incinerated or landfilled, which leads to local environmental pollution and energy waste that is incompatible with our climate objectives\u201d of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning oil and coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only about a fifth of plastic was recycled, said the report \u2014 lower than the European Union average of 30 percent or Scandinavian countries with more than 90 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French use about 47,000 tonnes of discardable cleaning wipes every year, and destroy some 650 million euros worth of unsold, non-food products. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS, Sept 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; France\u2019s parliament will from Tuesday debate legislation seeking to move the country closer to its ambition of a low-waste future, forcing electronics firms to use second-hand materials and cutting down on plastic refuse.
