{"id":42697,"date":"2019-09-17T11:07:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T03:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=42697"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:07:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T03:07:36","slug":"dozens-feared-dead-in-dr-congo-boat-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=42697","title":{"rendered":"Dozens feared dead in DR Congo boat accident"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/dr-congo-dozens-feared-dead-in-boat-accident\/a-50438315#\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/image\/46942231_303.jpg\" alt=\"The Epulu river in Congo\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KINSHASA, Sept 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; At least 36 people are missing\u00a0after a boat capsized in the Congo River on the outskirts of Kinshasa, the capital of\u00a0Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessel carrying passengers and cargo had departed from Mai-Ndombe province in Congo&#8217;s northwest and was bound for&nbsp;Kinshasa when it sank near the commune&nbsp;of Maluku sometime Saturday night into&nbsp;early Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of an estimated 102 passengers, 76 had been rescued, national police spokesman Pierrot Mwanamputu\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessel involved in the accident was a &#8220;baleiniere,&#8221; which is French for\u00a0&#8220;whaler.&#8221; They are commonly-used, flat-bottomed boats measuring between 15 to 30 meters long by 2 to 6 meters\u00a0wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police said the cause of the accident remains&nbsp;under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/congo-at-least-30-dead-dozens-missing-in-boat-accident\/a-48892852\">Boat accidents occur regularly in central Africa<\/a>, mainly due to unmarked waterways, overloading and dilapidated vessels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boats are often relied upon as a means of transport, as DR Congo&#8217;s road network is poorly maintained. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KINSHASA, Sept 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; At least 36 people are missing\u00a0after a boat capsized in the Congo River on the outskirts of Kinshasa, the capital of\u00a0Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), police said.
