CNN Indonesia has reported that Indonesian authorities are taking action against a subsidiary of a Malaysian company for allegedly being involved in the forest fires that have been contributing to the haze in the region. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), Sept 13 (Bernama) — Malaysia\u2019s Selangor state government has decided to conduct cloud seeding operations in haze affected areas with the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading exceeding 200 which is at a very unhealthy level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman, Hee Loy Sian in a statement, said the measure was agreed at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the Disaster Management Committee at district and state levels have also been activated when the API recorded readings of between 151 to 200 which is the unhealthy level for more than 24 hours while the state government will be supplying dust masks to members of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll schools, kindergartens and nurseries were ordered closed immediately when the API reading exceeded 200 after getting confirmation from the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“To combat open burning and haze in Selangor now, the state government will be adopting the National Open Burning Action Plan and the  National Haze Action Plan issued by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry,\u201d he said in a statement here Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, he reminded the people to adhere to instructions issued by the authorities and not to carry out open burning during the current haze season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Members of the public are told not to carry out open burning and to cooperate in putting out small fires and report fires to the Fire and Rescue Department at 999 and DOE at its toll-free line 1-800-88-2727.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll parties are urged not to allow their land and premises to be trespassed by irresponsible parties to carry out open burning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hee stressed that parties found guilty of open burning could face a fine of up to RM500,000 or jail, not more than five years or both under Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said a maximum compound of RM2,000 could also be imposed on each offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the state government is advising the people to reduce outdoor activities and follow the development on air quality via DOE website or Mobile Air Pollutant Index (MyIPU) application which could be downloaded into a mobile phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people can also channel information on open burning by contacting DOE at 1-800-88-2727 or DOE headquarters at 03-8871 2000 or Selangor DOE Control Room at 03-55197233.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to DOE website as at 7 am, the API in Johan Setia, Klang showed very unhealthy reading at 209 while five more areas at the unhealthy level are Shah Alam (133), Klang (124), Banting (122), Petaling Jaya (135), and Kuala Selangor (109).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is categorised as good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and above 300 (hazardous).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile CNN Indonesia has reported that Indonesian authorities are taking action against a subsidiary of a Malaysian company for allegedly being involved in the forest fires that have been contributing to the haze in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the republic’s authorities have sealed a plot of land in Riau which belongs to the subsidiary of the Malaysian firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report said the Environment and Forestry Ministry acted against PT Adei Plantation Industry after it was suspected of deliberately starting the forest fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar was quoted as saying that a large portion of the firm’s shares was owned by a plantation company based in Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have checked the company from Malaysia that started the fire. It (the land) was sealed on Sept 11,” she told CNN Indonesiaa<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
