{"id":39003,"date":"2019-08-24T10:51:17","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T02:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=39003"},"modified":"2019-08-24T10:51:18","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T02:51:18","slug":"first-vape-death-in-the-us-recorded-in-illinois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=39003","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;First vape death in the US&#8217; recorded in Illinois"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/660\/cpsprodpb\/6D3F\/production\/_108476972_gettyimages-454245786.jpg\" alt=\"A person vaping\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SPRINGFIELD (Illinois, US),Aug 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A patient has died after developing a severe respiratory disease due to vaping in the first such death in the US, say health officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US state of Illinois&#8217; health agency said the unnamed patient was between 17 and 38 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes amid an outbreak of lung disease across the US that officials have linked to use of e-cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said nearly 200 people have fallen ill from vaping nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDC director Robert Redfield said: &#8220;We are saddened to hear of the first death related to the outbreak of severe lung disease in those who use e-cigarette or &#8216;vaping&#8217; devices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: &#8220;This tragic death in Illinois reinforces the serious risks associated with e-cigarette products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Vaping exposes users to many different substances for which we have little information about related harms &#8211; including flavourings, nicotine, cannabinoids and solvents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said vaping devices were not safe for children, young adults, pregnant women or even adults who do not normally use tobacco products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on Friday, the CDC said it was aware of 193 potential cases of severe lung disease in 22 states that could be caused by vaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-two of the cases were in Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least two people have previously died in the US after their e-cigarette exploded in their face. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPRINGFIELD (Illinois, US),Aug 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A patient has died after developing a severe respiratory disease due to vaping in the first such death in the US, say health officials.
