REUTERS\/Suzanne Plunkett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LONDON, April 29 (NNN-Bernama-PA Media\/dpa) &#8212; London&#8217;s Heathrow airport has warned it expects its passenger numbers for the rest of the year to be affected by the situation in West Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 18.9 million people passed through its four terminals during the first three months of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a year-on-year increase of 3.7 per cent, which the west London airport said was because it \u201ctemporarily absorbed demand from elsewhere\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half a million passengers per day usually use airports in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, which are vital hubs for travel between Europe and the continents of Asia and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airspace closures following the outbreak of the war in West Asia on Feb&nbsp;28 had a major impact on air travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the region\u2019s airspace has since reopened, but many people are avoiding flying there because of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trading update, Heathrow said: \u201cWhile Heathrow has temporarily absorbed demand from elsewhere, passenger numbers for the rest of the year are likely to be impacted while&nbsp;there is significant uncertainty in West Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Sally Ding, Heathrow\u2019s chief financial officer, declared the airport is ready to go ahead with its plan to build a third runway \u201cwith the right regulatory framework and government policy in place\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said Heathrow is currently \u201cfull\u201d, which means \u201cfewer choices and higher fares for passengers, and missed opportunities for the UK economy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heathrow\u2019s first-quarter revenue increased by 2.3 per cent&nbsp;from a year ago to \u00a3844 million (US$1.14 billion), amid rises in passenger numbers, food and beverage sales and uptake of premium services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But its adjusted operating costs were 6.5 per cent&nbsp;higher, driven by an uptick in wages and national insurance payments, IT investments and the number of passenger requiring support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA-PA Media\/dpa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON, April 29 (NNN-Bernama-PA Media\/dpa) &#8212; London&#8217;s Heathrow airport has warned it expects its passenger numbers for the rest of the year to be affected by the situation in West Asia.
