{"id":33253,"date":"2019-07-16T20:15:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T12:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=33253"},"modified":"2019-07-16T20:19:34","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T12:19:34","slug":"malaysia-indonesia-to-challenge-eus-biofuel-regulation-at-wto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=33253","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia, Indonesia to challenge EU&#8217;s biofuel regulation at WTO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; Both Malaysia and Indonesia are committed to challenge the European Union (EU) Delegated Act\u00a0that curbs palm oil use in biofuels through the\u00a0World Trade\u00a0Organisation Dispute\u00a0Settlement Body as well as other possible\u00a0avenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also currently reviewing their relationship with the EU&nbsp;and its member states, the&nbsp;Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) said&nbsp;in a statement today following the 7th&nbsp;Ministerial Meeting of the&nbsp;Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) held here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ministers expressed&nbsp;regret that the&nbsp;EU Delegated Regulation entered into force on June 10, 2019. This was&nbsp;despite the various efforts undertaken by producing countries to provide information on&nbsp;the sustainability initiatives,\u201d MPI&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting also proposed to&nbsp;set up&nbsp;a CPOPC-EU&nbsp;Joint Working Group (JWG) on Palm Oil as a new platform to respond to the EU Delegated&nbsp;Act. This was after taking note that the CPOPC delegation and the European Commission had agreed to have regular dialogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe JWG&nbsp;shall engage&nbsp;CPOPC member countries and other palm oil producing countries, such as African palm oil producers, and will raise the issue of the&nbsp;smallholders and poverty alleviation to counter the Delegated Act,\u201d MPI&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting, co-chaired by Malaysia&#8217;s MPI minister&nbsp;Teresa Kok Suh Sim and Indonesia&#8217;s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution,&nbsp;discussed various&nbsp;issues related to the palm oil&nbsp;industry, including international trade policies and market access,&nbsp;business and smallholder engagements, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador of Colombia to Malaysia,&nbsp;Mauricio Gonzalez Lopez, attended the meeting in the country&#8217;s capacity as an observer state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MPI said the ministers welcomed the findings of study on \u201cMasterplan for the&nbsp;Strategic Implementation of SDGs in the Palm Oil Sector by 2030\u201d&nbsp;commissioned by CPOPC, which&nbsp;indicated that palm oil meets&nbsp;most of the&nbsp;17 objectives of UN&nbsp;SDGs. This was based on case&nbsp;studies conducted in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Colombia and&nbsp;Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the issue of the contaminant level of the&nbsp;3-Monochloropropanediol&nbsp;(3-MCPDE) proposed by&nbsp;the European Commission, she said the ministers agreed that one maximum&nbsp;level at 2.5&nbsp;ppm for all vegetable oils should be adopted&nbsp;as the&nbsp;acceptable safety limit for consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministers&nbsp;also&nbsp;agreed that CPOPC should continue working on the&nbsp;current issues related to palm oil industry, such as supply-demand,&nbsp;productivity, price stabilisation, smallholders\u2019 welfare, and the positive image of palm oil along its value chain, MPI said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MPI said all palm oil producing countries were invited to attend the Second Ministerial Meeting of Palm Oil Producing Countries in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (NNN-BERNAMA) &#8212; Both Malaysia and Indonesia are committed to challenge the European Union (EU) Delegated Act\u00a0that curbs palm oil use in biofuels through the\u00a0World Trade\u00a0Organisation Dispute\u00a0Settlement Body as well as other possible\u00a0avenues.
