{"id":323196,"date":"2026-01-27T10:02:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T02:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=323196"},"modified":"2026-01-27T10:02:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T02:02:06","slug":"historic-winter-storm-kills-at-least-11-across-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=323196","title":{"rendered":"Historic winter storm kills at least 11 across US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2026\/01\/26\/image-354963-1769433643.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A monster storm barreling\u00a0across the United States had killed at least 11 people on Monday, prompting\u00a0warnings to stay off the roads, mass flight cancelations and power outages\u00a0after a weekend of misery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain across swathes of the country\u00a0from Texas to New England, with temperatures set to fall dangerously low this\u00a0week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said five people were found dead outside\u00a0over the weekend, telling reporters &#8220;there is no more powerful reminder of\u00a0the danger of extreme cold.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Texas, authorities confirmed three deaths, including a 16-year-old girl\u00a0killed in a sledding accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two people died in Louisiana from hypothermia, the southern state&#8217;s health\u00a0department said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, one person was killed and two others injured Saturday during a\u00a0winter weather related collision in southeast Iowa, according to local State\u00a0Patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PowerOutage.com tracking site showed more than 820,000 customers without\u00a0electricity as of Monday, mostly in the US South where the storm intensified\u00a0on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Tennessee, where a band of ice has downed power lines, more than 250,000\u00a0residential and commercial customers were without electricity, while\u00a0Louisiana and Mississippi &#8212; where such storms are less common &#8212; each had\u00a0over 100,000 outages as of Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outages are particularly dangerous as the South is being walloped by\u00a0treacherous cold that the National Weather Service warns could set records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities from Texas to North Carolina and New York urged residents to stay\u00a0home due to the perilous conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary,&#8221; Texas&#8217;s Emergency\u00a0Management Division posted on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm was moving Monday through the US northeast and southeast Canada,\u00a0with some areas in Toronto seeing record-breaking snowfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 20 states and the US capital Washington have declared states of\u00a0emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal offices have been preemptively closed for Monday and several major\u00a0airports in Washington, Philadelphia and New York had nearly all flights\u00a0canceled for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracking site Flightaware.com showed more than 19,000 flights into and out of\u00a0the country had been scrapped since Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Maine, a small aircraft carrying eight passengers crashed on takeoff\u00a0Sunday evening at Bangor International Airport, the Federal Aviation\u00a0Administration (FAA) reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not immediately clear if the crash was weather-related or the\u00a0conditions of the passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump, who was riding out the storm at the White House, said\u00a0on his Truth Social platform Saturday: &#8220;We will continue to monitor, and stay\u00a0in touch with all States in the path of this storm. Stay Safe, and Stay\u00a0Warm!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brutal storm system is the result of a stretched polar vortex, an Arctic\u00a0region of cold, low-pressure air that normally forms a relatively compact,\u00a0circular system but sometimes morphs into a more oval shape, sending cold air\u00a0spilling across North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists say the increasing frequency of such disruptions may be linked to\u00a0climate change, though the debate is not settled and natural variability\u00a0plays a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Trump &#8212; who scoffs at climate change science and has rolled back green\u00a0energy policies &#8212; questioned how the cold front fit into broader climatic\u00a0shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING???&#8221; the Republican leader posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NWS warned that heavy ice could cause &#8220;long-duration power outages,\u00a0extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel\u00a0conditions,&#8221; including in many states less accustomed to intense winter\u00a0weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities warned of life-threatening cold that could last a week post-storm, especially in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where wind chill\u00a0lows were forecast to dip to extremes under -50F (-45C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such temperatures can cause frostbite within minutes. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A monster storm barreling\u00a0across the United States had killed at least 11 people on Monday, prompting\u00a0warnings to stay off the roads, mass flight cancelations and power outages\u00a0after a weekend of misery.
