{"id":323172,"date":"2026-01-26T15:31:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T07:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=323172"},"modified":"2026-01-26T15:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T07:31:12","slug":"spain-remembers-the-dead-a-week-on-from-rail-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=323172","title":{"rendered":"Spain remembers the dead a week on from rail tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2026\/01\/26\/image-354787-1769403680.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MADRID, Jan 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; People in the southern Spanish towns of Huelva and Adamuz held ceremonies Sunday a week on from the rail disaster that killed 45 people, many of them from the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Sunday&#8217;s crash between two high-speed trains happened near the village of Adamuz in the southern region of Andalusia, but most of the victims came from Huelva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony in Huelva began with a minute&#8217;s silence, at 7:43 pm, the time of the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a Madrid-Huelva train that collided head-on with another from Malaga travelling to Madrid. Of the 45 people who died, 36 were passengers on the Huelva-bound train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as those killed, 22 people are still being treated in hospital for injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Adamuz, where local people were among the first on the scene to help the victims, a funeral mass was held Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Rafael Angel Moreno spoke of the grief local people felt at what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bishop of Cordoba, Jesus Fernandez, presided at the funeral ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The working theory for investigators is that a crack in one of the rails might have caused a derailment. Driver error has been ruled out.
