{"id":322657,"date":"2026-01-21T10:40:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T02:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322657"},"modified":"2026-01-21T10:40:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T02:40:44","slug":"royals-visit-deadly-train-crash-site-as-spain-mourns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322657","title":{"rendered":"Royals visit deadly train crash site as Spain mourns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/dam.mediacorp.sg\/image\/upload\/s--4CjV00RO--\/c_fill,g_auto,h_468,w_830\/f_auto,q_auto\/v1\/mediacorp\/cna\/image\/2026\/01\/21\/2026-01-20t143225z_596217174_rc205jarkfkf_rtrmadp_3_spain-accident-train_1.jpg?itok=ESptUzQC\" alt=\"Royals visit deadly train crash site as Spain mourns\" title=\"Royals visit deadly train crash site as Spain mourns\"\/><figcaption>Spain&#8217;s King Felipe and Queen Letizia visit the site of the deadly derailment of two high-speed trains near Adamuz, in Cordoba<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CORDOBA (Spain), Jan 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Spain\u2019s king and queen visited Tuesday the site of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/world\/spain-train-crash-heavy-machinery-find-missing-bodies-5870626\">collision of two high-speed trains<\/a>\u00a0that killed at least 42 people, as the country began three days of national mourning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country&#8217;s deadliest rail accident in more than a decade took place late Sunday when a train operated by rail company Iryo, travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz in the southern Andalusia region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It crossed onto the other track, where it crashed into an oncoming train heading to Huelva, which also derailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official death toll rose to 42 by late Tuesday after another body was found in the wreckage, the regional government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 120 people were injured, with 37 still in hospital, including four children, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dressed in dark clothing, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia shook hands with emergency services workers near the spot where the mangled wreckage of the two trains remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They then visited a hospital in the nearby city of Cordoba where some of the injured are being treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to reporters after leaving the hospital, the king said he wanted to &#8220;convey the affection of the entire country&#8221; to the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santiago Salvador, a Portuguese national who broke a leg in the accident, said he felt lucky to be alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> &#8220;It was a very tragic accident; it looked like hell.
