EPA\/ISAAC KASAMANI\"\/><figcaption>Uganda&#8217;s President Yoweri Museveni will extend his four decades in power <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KAMPALA, Jan 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Uganda\u2019s President Yoweri Museveni\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/15\/polls-open-in-uganda-amid-crackdown-fears-of-violence-internet-blackout\">has been re-elected<\/a>\u00a0to a seventh term, the country\u2019s electoral commission has announced, after a tense campaign marked by an opposition crackdown and internet blackout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Museveni, 81, won with 71.65 percent of the vote, the commission said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He defeated his main challenger, 43-year-old Bobi Wine, who received 24.72 percent of the vote, according to the official results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Museveni\u2019s widely expected victory comes after an election campaign that the United Nations said was marred by \u201cwidespread repression and intimidation\u201d, including a crackdown on opposition rallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thursday\u2019s election also unfolded amid a nationwide internet blackout that drew&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/14\/uganda-faces-mounting-calls-to-end-internet-blackout-before-elections\">international criticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobi Wine, a singer-turned-politician whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, had claimed on social media on Election Day that \u201cmassive ballot stuffing\u201d was also taking place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesman for his opposition party, the National Unity Platform, said that the results were \u201ca sham\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobi Wine said earlier in the day that he had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/17\/ugandas-wine-says-escaped-raid-on-house-amid-disputed-presidential-vote\">escaped a police and army raid<\/a>&nbsp;on his house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCurrently, I am not at home, although my wife and other family members remain under house arrest. I know that these criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has been accused of overseeing a years-long crackdown on his political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet despite that, many Ugandans still praise the longtime leader as the man who ended Uganda\u2019s post-independence chaos and oversaw rapid economic growth in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really very happy to see he\u2019s won,\u201d said Isaac Kamba, a 37-year-old teacher at a pro-government rally in a Kampala cricket ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe victory comes because of his hard work, dedication and commitment to the people of Uganda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Election observers said on Saturday they saw no evidence of ballot stuffing but denounced \u201creports of intimidation, arrest and abductions\u201d targeting the opposition and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That \u201cinstilled fear and eroded public trust in the electoral process\u201d, said former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who was representing election observers from the African Union and other regional bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan told reporters that the internet shutdown \u201cdisrupted effective observation\u201d of this week\u2019s vote and \u201cincreased suspicion\u201d but that the overall conduct of the polls on Election Day was \u201cpeaceful\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A heavy police presence around the capital, Kampala, on Saturday, as the authorities have sought to prevent any possible protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ugandan opposition said at least 10 people were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/16\/incumbent-president-museveni-takes-strong-lead-in-uganda-election-count\">killed by police<\/a>&nbsp;in an attack on a local opposition lawmaker\u2019s home in the town of Butambala, about 55km (35 miles) southwest of Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local authorities put the death toll at seven, with police alleging that machete-wielding opposition \u201cgoons\u201d attacked a police station and vote-tallying centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this campaign, Bobi Wine\u2019s rallies were repeatedly interrupted by security forces firing tear gas and bullets. At least one person was killed in the violence and hundreds of opposition supporters were arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Museveni\u2019s victory was long viewed as a formality, as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2022\/12\/23\/qa-ugandas-museveni\">former rebel&nbsp;fighter<\/a>&nbsp;has total control over the state and security apparatus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since taking office four decades ago, he has changed the constitution twice to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/1\/2\/uganda-enacts-law-ending-presidential-age-limits\">remove age and term limits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His governing party, the National Resistance Movement, also had a commanding lead in parliamentary seats, according to provisional results.
