{"id":322296,"date":"2026-01-16T12:31:02","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T04:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322296"},"modified":"2026-01-16T12:31:02","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T04:31:02","slug":"spain-nabs-cocaine-ring-that-used-swimmers-on-high-seas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322296","title":{"rendered":"Spain nabs cocaine ring that used swimmers on high seas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/assets.nst.com.my\/images\/articles\/33CE64470071FC0CF8B1F00974CD59AF_low.jpg\" alt=\"A drone view of a cargo vessel carrying almost 10 metric tons of cocaine concealed in a shipment of salt is being towed to port in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. - REUTERS PIC\"\/><figcaption>A cargo vessel carrying almost 10 metric tons of cocaine concealed in a shipment of salt is being towed to port in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MADRID, Jan 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Spanish police on Thursday said they had busted a network that saw smugglers swim on the high seas to help stash Colombian cocaine on Europe-bound container ships and hijack vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The network employed a so-called &#8220;monkeys&#8221; technique, which used &#8220;youngsters who are good swimmers and from low-income families to load the drug on the vessels that were on the high seas&#8221;, police said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other members of the scheme travelled to Spain to &#8220;raid the containers by intercepting the ships before their arrival at the Gibraltar Strait&#8221;, a busy and narrow body of water separating Europe and North Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the crew of a ship bound for the southern Spanish port of Cadiz reported stowaways on the deck, with 1.3 tonnes of cocaine found in a container, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly afterwards, another ship passing through Portuguese waters raised the alarm about &#8220;the hijacking of the vessel&#8221; by armed stowaways who unloaded cocaine concealed in a container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation discovered that the network retrieved the drug by throwing it overboard merchant vessels to smaller, faster boats close to Europe, &#8220;subduing the ships&#8217; crew and extracting the drug from the containers using military techniques and weapons of war.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cocaine was then stored in southern Spain before its transportation by road to other European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities made 30 arrests and seized 2.4 tonnes of cocaine, military-grade weapons, ladders used to raid the ships, luxury vehicles and cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain&#8217;s close ties with Latin America and proximity to Morocco, a top cannabis producer, make it a key entry point for drugs into Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, Spanish police announced their largest-ever seizure of cocaine at sea after impounding a Europe-bound container ship in the Atlantic Ocean carrying almost 10 tonnes of the drug. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/world\/world\/2026\/01\/1357876\/spain-nabs-cocaine-ring-used-swimmers-high-seas#\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MADRID, Jan 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Spanish police on Thursday said they had busted a network that saw smugglers swim on the high seas to help stash Colombian cocaine on Europe-bound container ships and hijack vessels.
